DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

JOB TITLE: CHILD AND YOUTH PROGRAM ASSISTANT (GSE-1702- 03/04)

The primary purpose of this position is to provide appropriate developmental care and instruction for children and youth, ranging in age from 6 weeks to 18 years in a Department of Defense (DoD) Children and Youth Program.

Serves as Child and Youth Program Assistant (CYPA) in one or more child and youth programs.

Assists in planning, coordinating, and implementing activities and special events that meet the physical, social, emotional and cognitive activities for program participants based on observed needs of individual children/youth.

Helps prepare, arrange and maintain indoor and outdoor activity areas and materials to accommodate age/stage appropriateness, daily skills and daily schedules.

Conducts and/or Coordinates age appropriate play and learning activities to foster individual and group activity development.

Reviews or assists in implementing daily schedules and activity plans, and may brief lower graded employees.

Interacts professionally with staff members, parents and the Command.

Supervises and interacts with children during all programmed activities using approved child guidance and youth development techniques.

Promotes and models safety, fitness, health and nutrition practices.

Helps arrange for/serve appropriate snacks/meals where applicable.

Assists and/or prepares and implements program options for children and youth with special requirements.

Uses prepared curriculum/program materials and assists with developing a list of needed supplies and equipment. Secures supplies, equipment and facilities.

Helps create adult-made games and play materials (i.e., mixing paint, play dough; assembling props for dramatic play, activities, etc.), and assists with developing a list of needed supplies and equipment for submission to the supervisor.

Receives children from parents. Notes all special instructions that parents may provide. Maintains an accurate count of children at all times.

Attends to physical needs of the children (i.e. holding, rocking, diapering, feeding, etc.).

Notifies the supervisor or Facility Director of any marks or other signs that might indicate a suspicion of illness, abuse, or neglect.

Helps children collect their belongings when they depart. Ensures that each child leaves with a parent or someone authorized to take the child.

May assist children and youth with special projects and homework.

May participate in conferences with parent and staff.

Completes designated training requirements within designated time frames. Completes the required background checks and maintains updated checks to include the Child and Youth National Agency Check with Inquiries (CNACI).

Provides superior customer service with an emphasis on courtesy. Assists customers and communicates positively in a friendly manner.

Adheres to safety regulations and standards. Uses required safety equipment, and observes safe work procedures.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

GSE-02 ENTRY LEVEL (CY-1) : No prior experience required. Ability to complete mandatory training. Ability to demonstrate knowledge of proper procedures for: emergencies to care for injured children; implementation of safety and sanitation practices; management of indoor and outdoor hazards; maintaining child accountability; reporting child abuse and providing developmental activities to enhance a learning environment.

GSE-03 INTERMEDIATE LEVEL (CY-1) : Must have six (6) months experience working with children or youth in a child or youth setting and have completed DoD Standardized Entry Level Module Training. Possess skills to interpret and implement developmentally appropriate curriculum and practices under immediate supervision to provide direct care, education and development for children and youth.

GSE-04 TARGET LEVEL (CY-2) : One year prior experience working with children, youth or teens in a day care setting is required. Six months of this experience must have been at the GSE-03 level or private sector equivalent. Possess a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential or Military School Age (MSA) credential, or a two year degree in a related field, or complete the DoD Standardized Module Training. Incumbent must have successful completion of all required training for Program Assistant ( Entry and Intermediate Level Module Training ).

May work a fluctuating work schedule to complete work assignments outside of the typical work hours.

EVALUATIONS:

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS : ALL LEVELS

Must be at least 18 years old and have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school (please attach proof of completion to your resume).

6 months of experience in EARLY childhood

Must be able to lift and carry up to 45 lbs, long periods of standing, walking, stooping, bending and sitting on the floor are required.

Must be able complete training in First Aid and CPR within six months of employment.

Must be able to obtain a Food Handler's Certificate.

Must successfully be able to pass required Installation, State, Child National Agency and Health Checks.

Open availability from 5:45am - 6:15pm, evening training hours as required

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Knowledge and experience working in a group or individual program with children and youth.

Knowledge, training and education in the field of early childhood development policies, regulations, procedures and processes.

Skill and ability to make mature and sound decisions when working with children, youth and parents.

Skill and ability to deal with coworkers, subordinates and supervisors as a close working team.

Have a strong command of English language to include written and oral skills.
