Summary

This position is in the National Museum of American History (NMAH), Office of Curatorial Affairs, Department of Collections Management Services (CMS), Collections Documentation Services (CDS). The National Museum of American History's (NMAH) Department of Collections Management Services supports collections accountability, preservation, and access to foster responsible collections stewardship and facilitate collections use.

Responsibilities

The incumbent serves as a Collections Accountability Specialist and supports the collections management work required to establish and maintain inventory control over the collections.

The incumbent will also perform the following duties:
  • Conducts full physical inventories of prioritized collection areas working in a team-based environment.
  • Carries out diverse tasks to ensure digital images that meet NMAH digital asset standards exist for each inventoried object from defined collections inventory projects.
  • Carries out diverse tasks to ready object text for the physical collections inventory.
  • Supports acquisition program work for collections inventory projects.
  • Carries out straightforward reconciliation of discrepancies between objects and NMAH collections records within the context of collections inventory projects following NMAH acquisition program guidelines.

Qualifications

You qualify for this GS-09 position if you possess one year of specialized experience at the GS-07 level. For this position specialized experience is 1)experience using Mimsy XG or a similar collections management system in support of the collections management function of collections inventory and 2) conducting physical inventories of collections, following object handling and preservation standards and best practices, to document and verify information in a Collections Information System.

OR

Master's or equivalent graduate degree;

OR

2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree;

OR

LL.B. or J.D., if related

OR

You may qualify by a combination of experience and education.

How You Will Be Evaluated

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Your application will be evaluated first for the basic qualifications described above. The applications that meet the basic qualifications will be evaluated further against the following criteria:

  • Knowledge of collections management functions, standards and practices (including physical inventory, documentation, registration, storage, and preservation) for the inventory and reconciliation of collections.
  • Ability to conduct physical inventories of collections, following object handling and preservation standards and best practices, to document and verify information in a Collections Information System.
  • Skill in using collection information systems and databases to support and maintain the collection's information.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, work collaboratively in a team-based environment, and organize collections inventory tasks.
  • Knowledge of inventory data standards and digital asset standards to identify adherence to these standards and apply the range of solutions appropriate for addressing irregularities.
  • Ability to prepare and reconcile museum collections data from a variety of data sources, following established standards, to support collections accountability and inventory work documented in a Collections Information System.

Better Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and satisfies most of the job related competencies above.

Good Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements, but does not satisfy most of the job related competencies above to a substantive degree.

This category rating process does not add veterans' preference points or apply the "rule of three", but protects the rights of veterans by placing them ahead of non-preference eligibles within each category. A selecting official may make selections from the highest quality category (Best Category) provided no preference eligible in that category is passed over to select a non-preference eligible in that category unless the requirements of 5 U.S.C. 3317(b) or 3318(b) are satisfied.
