Summary

This position is located in the Goddard Space Flight Center, Engineering and Technology Directorate (ETD), Software Engineering Division, Flight Software Systems Branch (Code 582), which provides flight software (FSW), essential FSW support systems, and FSW services to selected managed projects. Code 582 is seeking a highly experience individual to serve as a Flight Software Systems Engineer to support a major mission development on a mission like Restore-L.

Responsibilities

  • Provides overall senior technical insight into the flight software systems development and management of policies, procedures, and operational schedules necessary for new systems and functions.
  • Performs pre-project planning duties, such as concept development, master integration planning, and programming design for projects, taking into account feasibility, costs, ITAR issues, and economics.
  • Serves as a recognized flight software systems expert, technical authority, and technical advisor/consultant to agency management, other government agencies, and the industry.
  • Directs or manages programs of national or international scope, including the development, design and/or implementation of large, new, and unusually complex systems that result in major advancement in the state-of-the- art of broad technologies
  • Leads troubleshooting efforts on particularly unusual engineering problems such as: spacecraft and/or science instrument flight software development and testbed activities.
  • Serves as primary point of contact on systems requirements affecting major projects, such as for all the Restore-L Payload Flight Software Systems Engineering.
  • Provides authoritative technical decisions, advice, and consultation to contractors on variables and unknowns affecting planning, coordination, and critical problems with respect to safety, costs, and economics.
  • Serves as senior flight software expert consultant and advisor to subordinate activities.
  • Integrates and coordinates the efforts of agency personnel with those of contractors in research, design and development, and engineering
  • Senior/Lead Computer Engineer responsible for the end-to-end systems engineering leadership across the entire range of flight software elements and external interfaces of a major mission development such as: Restore-L.
  • Establishes validity criteria of studies to guide contract personnel specializing in various facets of the problems.

Qualifications

GS-14:

In addition to meeting the Basic Education Requirement, you must have one year of specialized experience to the next lower grade (GS-13), which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above. Specialized experience is defined as leading, managing, and/or performing activities associated with the development, testing, and implementation of complex systems/system software including aerospace vehicles, spacecraft, ground systems and/or instruments.

GS-15:

In addition to meeting the Basic Education Requirement, you must have one year of specialized experience to the next lower grade (GS-14), which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above. Specialized experience is defined as experience providing hands-on technical leadership related to the development, testing, integration, and operation of highly complex spacecraft and instrument flight software test beds, instruments and/or sensor systems for spacecraft, science instruments, and simulators for instruments/sensors/spacecraft.

Education

Basic Education Requirement: A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major study in Aeronautical Engineering, Aeronautics, Aerospace Engineering, Architecture, Astronautical Engineering, Astronautics, Astronomy, Astrophysics, Biomedical Engineering, Ceramic Engineering, Ceramics, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science*, Earth and Planetary Science, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Geology, Geophysics, Industrial Engineering, Materials Engineering, Materials Science, Mathematics (Pure or Applied), Applied Mechanics, Engineering Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Metallurgy, Meteorology, Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Engineering Physics, Oceanography, Optical Engineering, Physics, Applied Physics, Engineering Physics, Space Science, Structural Engineering, Welding Engineering or other appropriate physical science or engineering field. Degrees in engineering technology are not considered to be qualifying for this position. *Note: Curriculum must include 30 semester hours of course work in a combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science. Of the 30 semester hours, 15 must be in any combination of statistics and mathematics which includes differential and integral calculus.
