Job Announcement

Performs routine journeyman-level tasks; installs, maintains and repairs sanitary sewer, storm drain, potable water and gas plumbing systems; and performs related work as required. Performs a full range of plumbing assignments using independent judgment to make decisions requiring the application of procedures and practices to specific work situations, and may be assisted by the Plumber II on more complex tasks. Works in concert with other plumbers and tradespersons to perform a full range of plumbing assignments for projects on county properties as required for routine and preventative maintenance. Uses a wide range of tools and other equipment typical in the plumbing trade. Provides customer service with courtesy, respect and attention to detail; works cooperatively with staff; and assures that work is completed in accordance with agency procedures and plumbing codes.

Illustrative Duties

  • Installs, maintains and repairs sanitary sewer, storm drain, potable water and gas plumbing systems;
  • Installs, maintains and repairs and/or replaces water heaters and recirculating pumps;
  • Maintains/repairs single and three phase electric pump motors and pump motor control centers;
  • Maintains/repairs commercial, industrial, and residential plumbing components, fixtures, special materials and apparatus;
  • Performs renovation and preventive maintenance functions;
  • Prepares cost estimates and where appropriate, provides information to plumbing contractors;
  • Requisitions materials and equipment;
  • Maintains inventory of spare parts/materials in shop or on assigned service vehicle;
  • Operates assigned service vehicle;
  • May train/oversee work of Maintenance Trade Helpers.


Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the standards, practices and equipment of the plumbing trade;
  • Knowledge of applicable county, state and national plumbing and safety codes;
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and procedures as well as common hazards associated with plumbing;
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions as well as drawings, specifications and
  • manufacturer's manuals;
  • Ability to utilize tools of pertinent to the trade, including, drain cleaning equipment, cameras, jetting, torches, grooving machines, pipe threaders, closet auger and plunger;
  • Ability to plan and perform work at the Journeyman-level;
  • Ability to estimate time and materials needs;
  • Ability to maintain good interpersonal relationships;
  • Ability to train/instruct Maintenance Trade Helpers;
  • Ability to perform duties in inclement weather, climb ladders and scaffolds and routinely work in dark, hot, cold, damp environments in tiring, physically demanding positions for long periods of time with possible exposure to hazardous materials.


Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following: High school diploma or GED issued by a state department of education; and two year technical degree in the plumbing trade; or completion of apprentice-level plumbing vocational training; or four years practical, progressively responsible plumbing experience.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Valid state motor vehicle operator's license;
  • Valid journeyman plumber certification from the state of Virginia.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a check of the Child Protective Services Registry, and a driver's license check to the satisfaction of the employer.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of the standards, practices and equipment of the plumbing trade and of applicable county, state and national plumbing and safety codes. Must have the ability to follow written and oral instructions as well as being able to decipher drawings, specifications and manufacturer's manuals. Experience utilizing tools pertinent to the trade, including, drain cleaning equipment, cameras, jetting, torches, grooving machines, pipe-threaders, closet auger and plunger. Ability to plan and perform work at the Journeyman-level and estimate time and materials needs. Ability to work with others and maintain good interpersonal relationships. Ability to perform duties in inclement weather, climb ladders and scaffolds and routinely work in dark, hot, cold, damp environments in tiring, physically demanding positions for long periods of time with possible exposure to hazardous materials.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to lift 50 pounds. Ability to climb using either a ladder or a portable lift. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
