This is a professional position reporting to the Vice President, Product Strategy (PS). The Sr. Director, DevOps Engineer will lead and own work-streams for critical digital initiatives and is responsible for customer-facing web and mobile applications using cutting-edge Open Source frameworks, creating highly available RESTful services, and architecting and implementing full-stack Javascript based systems. The DevOps Engineer's role is to influence the culture, facilitate technical delivery and work on strategy and execution and be part of the process to lead a team that covers product work, site reliability engineering, development tooling, quality engineering, release management, and overall performance. Job Duties: Build and lead a team of engineers through coaching, mentoring, feedback and hands-on technical development Proactively contribute to solutions that diminish operational issues, help squads build highly scalable applications, and architect infrastructure as code to gain efficiencies and optimize performance across all AIA Product Strategy digital initiatives. Support timely delivery of technical solutions to address business needs Advocate and advance modern, agile software development practices and help develop and evangelize great engineering and organizational practices Grow a healthy, collaborative engineering culture in line with Product Strategy values (Passionate, United, Transparent, Straightforward) Be an active part of the tribe leadership team and collaborate with other leaders in the organization Work with product owners to understand desired application capabilities and testing scenarios Continuously improve software engineering practices Work within and across squads to design, develop, test, implement, and support technical solutions across a full-stack of development tools and technologies Lead the craftsmanship, availability, resilience, and scalability of solutions Awareness of and staying abreast of top tech trends, experiment with and learn new technologies, participate in internal & external technology communities, and mentor other members of the engineering community Foster innovation, inclusion, implementation of cutting-edge technologies, outside-of-the-box-thinking, teamwork, self-organization, and diversity. Own the development, release, and CI/CD tools Be knowledgeable about security principles and practices and enforce, when needed. Weigh in, educate, and be the advocate for scalable and maintainable architectural decisions. Manage work simultaneously, producing work related to multiple products & processes. Communicate effectively with strong verbal communication & presentation skills; effectively adjusting written and verbal communication styles to different audiences; listen for understanding. Manage change and promote adaptability, encouraging colleagues and team members to align work within a dynamic work environment. Create a culture of accountability by focusing on common outcomes, timeframes, and expected levels of effort. Provide recognition and feedback; actively address any issues in a timely manner. Drive innovation by providing active coaching to support colleagues and/or team members in reframing problems and adapting approaches to solve problems either independently or within their squad. A strong interest and enthusiasm for technology, learning, and finding the best solution Demonstrated experience working in an agile environment Demonstrated experience in understanding in all things AWS (EC2, RDS, Elasticsearch, SQS, SNS, S3, Lambda, etc) Demonstrated experience in configuration management for a CI/CD environment using industry tools such as Jenkins / Travis CI / Circle CI A philosophical approach to automate away from manual efforts The ability to prioritize, estimate, and oversee project work balanced with ongoing support A strong sense of ownership and accountability. Keen understanding and desire for shipping software in quick iterations: Test driven development & CI/CD & are an Agilist Keen understanding and desire to build and mentor high performing engineering teams. Thrive well in an environment of innovation, implementation of cutting-edge technologies, teamwork, self-organization, and diversity Demonstrated experience in leading, managing, coaching and mentoring software developers and quality engineers towards delivering timely, high quality software - together Demonstrated knowledge and understanding about software development PreferredDemonstrated experience in architecting containerized environments for micro-services Demonstrated experience in creating RESTful APIs Demonstrated experience partnering with both near and off-shore teams Demonstrated experience with common industry tools such as: Docker, Puppet, Chef, Maven, Kubernetes, New Relic, PagerDuty, Opsgenie Demonstrated experience with profiling and optimizing application and database performance Familiarity with Atlassian's suite of tools (Jira, Confluence) Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent experience with a minimum of 7-10 years relevant experience as a DevOps engineer. A minimum of 5 years of experience in design and coding applications in multiple Javascript frameworks including Node.js, Ember, Angular, React, Vue, etc. Supervisory Requirements none
