Responsibilities

  • Responsible for technical planning, analysis, design, development, testing, configuration, integration, installation, implementation, quality assurance, maintenance, and management of network systems.
  • Plan periodic reviews of installed automated systems to determine if approved systems plans have been effectively installed.
  • Ensure the application of information security/information assurance policies are in the delivery of systems administration services.
  • Develop configuration management plans for complex local area networks and wide area networks (LAN/WAN).
  • Provide training programs on the use of LAN/WAN facilities.
  • Develop standard operating procedures concerning operation of IT systems, services and activities.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience and/or education requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Basic Requirement:
Applicants must have IT-related experience demonstrating the following competencies appropriate to, or above, the level of this position. Your resume and work experience should clearly support your ability to meet these competencies and will be evaluated as part of the entire application process.
Attention to Detail- experience reviewing my own information technology-related work or data to ensure accuracy, completeness, and consistency with standards. My work or the data that I produce is typically reviewed by my supervisor or another colleague
Customer Service - experience having brief contact with customers to provide information about available information technology products and services and providing customers with standard products or routine services to address information technology needs
Oral Communication - experience informing my supervisor and other IT staff of the status of information technology systems, projects, or daily operations, including the status of information technology systems, projects, or daily operations, including the communication of basic technical information to a non-technical audience
Problem Solving - identifying or selecting from a number of alternatives to address routine information technology-related issues by gathering and applying information from standard sources that provide a limited number of solutions.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, applicants must also meet the following requirement:

To qualify for the GS-09 level:

All applicants must possess at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-07).

Specialized experience is defined as: Experience with operations, maintenance, and support of servers with client based computers located throughout the organization; assisting with administering systems in the Local Area Network (LAN) and Wide Area Network (WAN) such as associated Information Technology (IT) equipment, software, and interfaces; and troubleshooting IT system problems to find best method to resolve problems.
OR
Education: You must have master' or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree, or completion of all requirements for an LL.B. if related from an accredited college or university. (NOTE: You must attach a copy of your transcripts)
OR
Combination of Graduate Education and Experience: You must have some specialized experience as described in A, but less than one year; and I have less than three years of graduate-level education as described in B. I have computed the percentage of the requirements that I meet, and the total is at least 100%. (To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of graduate education by 36. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify) (NOTE: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)

To qualify for the GS-11 level:

All applicants must possess at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-09).

Specialized experience is defined as: Conducting systems administration and troubleshooting to support customer requirements; assisting with administering systems in the Local Area Network (LAN) and Wide Area Network (WAN) such as associated Information Technology (IT) equipment, software, and interfaces; and applying information assurance and security policies and practices on all work assignments.
OR
Education: You must have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M., if related
OR
Combination of Graduate Education and Experience: You must have a combination of education and experience. Education and experience must be computed to determine eligibility; it must total at least 100 percent. To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of graduate education by 18. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. (Only education above two years (36 semester hours) of graduate education is creditable towards meeting the requirement at the GS-09 level).

To qualify for the GS-12 level:

All applicants must possess at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-11).

Specialized experience is defined as: Conducting systems administration planning and troubleshooting to support customer requirements; administering systems in the Local Area Network (LAN) and Wide Area Network (WAN) such as associated Information Technology (IT) equipment, software, and interfaces; assisting with the development of local policies, plans, and processes related to systems administration; and applying information assurance and security policies and practices on all work assignments.

You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas:
  • Information Assurance
  • Information Technology Customer Support
  • System Administration


Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-07, GS-09, GS-11).
