As a Firefighter Medic for the Airports Authority you will protect lives, to respond to and fight fires, to deliver emergency medical care and to help others.

Firefighter Medic

Serves in the Fire and Rescue Department of the Office of Public Safety at either Washington Dulles International Airport or Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.

Performs full performance level Firefighter functions in fire prevention, suppression, and rescue, and advanced life support (ALS) level emergency medical services (EMS). Responds to and mitigates emergency situations. Performs related functions.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Responds to and mitigates emergency incidents including ALS tasks requiring training and certification as an EMT-P. Performs/leads waterborne or industrial accident response as certified and assigned.

Performs daily inspections of apparatus, tools, and equipment to ensure their operational readiness. Operates fire response vehicles safely.

Performs individual/team fire ground operations for fire control and property conservation.

Serves as an ALS provider, performs EMS assessment/treatment/disposition/transportation tasks; directs Basic Life Support (BLS) providers and may act as EMS supervisor.

Performs as a member or shift team leader to control and stabilize releases or potential releases of HAZMAT when approaching the material.

Inspects or helps inspect airport buildings for adherence to baseline fire and life safety codes.

Performs station maintenance and housekeeping.

May lead or help lead non-specialty type training modules/sessions, as required.

Assists with the Department's EMS internship programs.

Participates in Airports Authority and/or community relations programs.

Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Must be at least 18 years old at the time of the written examination.

One year of independent practice experience as an Advanced Life Support Provider.

Be able to successfully complete a background investigation including a full employment history check, a credit check, a criminal history records check, and a driving records check.

Be able to pass a comprehensive medical and vision examination including drug screening.

Be able to successfully pass a physical ability examination and a polygraph examination.

Knowledge of, and skill in, fire prevention, suppression and rescue methods, and tactics.

Knowledge of, and skill in using, ALS, ACLS and PALS methods, tactics, and techniques.

Knowledge of, and skill in, HAZMAT and/or Water Rescue operations, as certified/assigned.

Skill in maintaining/ operating fire suppression apparatus and fire/EMS/rescue equipment.

Ability to perform basic analyses of data and information and make recommendations.

Ability to speak and write effectively.

Ability to use a computer and modern office suite software for time and attendance reporting and other functions.

Ability to work under pressure, multi-task, and maintain emotional self-control during emergencies, critical incidents and other situations.

For Certified Firefighter Medics Candidates (Only) :

Must have Firefighter II certification, including HAZMAT Operations (HMO) certification, accredited by National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the National Board on Fire Service Professional Qualifications (Pro Board) or the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Firefighting experience at an Airport Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) airport (commercial or military).

Certification as an Airport Firefighter by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), or a fully equivalent certification.

One year of progressively responsible experience as a full firefighter member (not a trainee) of an organized fire department. (Volunteer service may be creditable only if it included regularly recurring participation in training/instruction and response to fire emergencies.)

Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification accredited by the American Heart Association or the American Safety and Health Institute (ASHI).

EDUCATION

A high school diploma or a Certificate of General Educational Development (GED).

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES REQUIRED

A state driver's license in good standing.

Certification as an Emergency Medical Technician-P from the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians.

Firefighter II certification, including HAZMAT Operations (HMO) certification, accredited by National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the National Board on Fire Service Professional Qualifications (Pro Board) or the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC),within 12 months of date of hire or placement into the position.

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification within 12 months of date of hire or placement into the position.

NECESSARY SPECIAL FACTORS

Works under pressure and maintains emotion self-control during emergencies.

Work requires heavy physical effort; uses strength, climbing/balancing, and crawling.

Regularly exposed to dangerous/hazardous conditions, communicable diseases, and potential for serious injury or death. Wears personal protective equipment.

Works established shifts; is subject to holdover and recall.

Subject to one-time and recurring training, certification and other requirements and standards mandated by the Commonwealth of Virginia and other proper authority.

Work is typically reviewed in progress and upon completion for quality, quantity, timeliness, teamwork, customer service and other factors.
