Position Description:

Now in its 52nd year, University Honors (UH) is the Honors College’s oldest and largest living-learning program at the University of Maryland, College Park. Of the 1,000 Honors students who matriculate to the university each year, approximately half of them choose to join UH.

The Assistant Director for Academic Affairs will join UH at the most exciting period in its history. Over the course of the next several years, UH will undertake dramatic improvements to its curricular and cocurricular programs, welcome new full-time faculty members, and see a significant expansion in its staff. In addition, beginning in 2021, UH will occupy purpose-built program space in a new building. Together, these changes promise to transform UH into a model for how to conduct Honors education at state flagship universities across the country. The new Assistant Director for Academic Affairs will be at the heart of these efforts.

The Assistant Director for Academic Affairs will assist in the planning, management, and assessment of academic programming in UH. Duties include (but are not limited to) faculty support; course development; outcomes assessment; regular reporting and related research; development and implementation of academic-related policies and procedures; data collection for strategic planning; collaboration with other UH team members on co-curricular programming; and coordination with a variety of units across campus.

The Assistant Director for Academic Affairs reports to the Director of University Honors and oversees up to four graduate assistants.

Minimum Qualifications:

- A Ph.D. or other terminal degree from an accredited academic institution.
- Minimum of 2 years full-time professional experience (or equivalent experience) working in an academic university setting. Relevant experience includes university teaching, academic program administration, curriculum planning and assessment, and/or faculty support.
- Broad intellectual interests and the ability to think across traditional disciplinary boundaries.
- Excellent communication, presentation, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as collaboratively.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and competing obligations.
- Ability to work effectively with different constituencies, including students, faculty, and staff on campus and in the greater Washington D.C. area.
- Familiarity with data reporting programs (e.g., Excel) and/or statistics packages (e.g., SPSS).
- Willingness and ability to engage in occasional evening and weekend work.

Preferred Qualifications:

- Direct experience working with college/university faculty.
- Experience with qualitative and/or quantitative techniques related to program evaluation and/or learning outcomes assessment.
- Experience as the instructor of undergraduate courses at an accredited academic institution
- Direct experience with diversity and inclusion initiatives, and working with diverse staff, faculty and students.
- Experience training, supervising, and supporting staff and graduate assistants.
- Good understanding of the values, complexity, and diversity of a public higher education institution.
