The primary purpose of this position is to maintain a broad range of grounds maintenance equipment such as mowers, edgers, hand tools, chainsaws, and other miscellaneous equipment and tools.

  • Operates a variety of gasoline, diesel, or electric powered wheeled vehicles, such as platform trucks, van trucks, stake trucks, or dump trucks, which typically have a gross vehicle weight (GVW) of more (cont)
  • (cont) than 10,000 and up to 26,000 pounds and mowers of less weight. Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean work environment.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-8600, Engine Overhaul Group. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

The screen out element for this position is the ability to do the work of a SMALL ENGINE MECHANIC (ENGINEERING EQUIPMENT OPERATOR) without more than normal supervision.

JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
1. Knowledge of techniques for the teardown, adjustment, repair, reassemble and running of operational checks on components of small engines and gasoline and diesel powered equipment and tools including associated mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
2. Skill in the use of advanced test/diagnostic equipment (test lamps, timing light, multi meters, hydraulic pressure testers etc.)
3. Ability to interpret and apply manufactures repair manuals and technical specifications, schematics and engineering drawings, diagnostic codes, computer printouts, and safety manuals.
4. Knowledge of and skill in operating one or more gasoline, diesel, or electric powered wheeled vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of more than 10,000 and up to 26,000 pounds such as platform trucks, van trucks, stake trucks, dump trucks, passenger vans, shuttle buses, cargo vans, and mowers.
5. Knowledge of traffic and safety regulations, practices, and procedures pertaining to motor vehicle and engineering equipment operations.
6. Ability to follow instructions, work orders, and specifications related to equipment maintenance and engineering equipment operations.

PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Work requires frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, lifting, carrying items that weigh up to 50 pounds, twisting of the wrist, reaching, turning, moving of hands, arms, feet, and legs to operate hand and foot controls.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is performed indoors and outdoors. Subject to exposure to sun and chilly and/or rainy weather. Also subject to exposure to dirt, dust, grease, fumes and mud and may need to wear protective clothing such as gloves, safety shoes, and boots. There is a chance of injuries such as bruises, cuts and scrapes, burns, shocks, strains, skin irritations and broken bones as a result of accidents while performing as a mechanic, driving, or from falling objects when loading and unloading vehicles.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
