Summary

The Safety and Mission Assurance Directorate at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) is currently seeking interested applicants for the position of Aerospace Engineer in the Reliability and Risk Assessment Branch (3710). This position serves as a GSFC expert in Reliability Engineering and Probalistic Risk Assessment and is responsible for establishing, maintaining, and evaluating reliability engineering and assurance programs.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as a lead engineer, technical advisor, and expert in reliability, responsible for the development of policy, requirements, and analysis methodology of aerospace programs.
  • Responsible from concept definition through tests and operational phases to ensure the safety and reliability of systems and equipment in an operational environment.
  • Reviews, evaluates, and conducts reliability studies and risk assessments of spacecraft, instrument, and experiment hardware.
  • Performs Probabilistic Risk Assessments (PRAs), reliability predictions and assessments, failure analyses, Failure Mode Effect and Criticality Analyses (FMECA), Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA), and Fault Tree Analyses.
  • Develops reliability math models for basic and redundant systems, performing trade-off analyses for alternate designs to determine the best approach to reliable and cost effective operation.
  • Provides input to and interactions with maintainability/availability studies.
  • Participates in failure reviews and work with project management, design review teams, and contractors to analyze failure causes, recommend corrective action, and review implementation of corrective action.
  • Assists project management in interpreting and establishing reliability requirements, and/or developing reliability and PRA Implementation Plans for spacecraft systems and instruments that are commensurate with reasonable resources and schedule.
  • Assist Chief Safety and Mission Assurance Officers in the implementation of reliability requirements on major R&D contracts.
  • Apply reliability analysis techniques to the evaluation of empirical anomaly data acquired during in-orbit operations of GSFC spacecraft.
  • Develop theories, mathematical models, Weibull analysis, and other techniques to apply this information to enhance the accuracy and validity of reliability predictions, maintainability/availability studies, and environmental test policy.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Education Requirement, you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-13), which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

Specialized experience is defined as leading reliability studies or analyses (FMEA, Prediction, Fault Tree, and/or PRA) for mission risk assessment from design through operational use for Space and Ground Systems; Serving as technical specialist responsible for problem assessment, developing complex mission specific reliability/risk assessment plans, and methodology improvement initiatives.

Basic Education Requirement: A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major study in Aeronautical Engineering, Aeronautics, Aerospace Engineering, Architecture, Astronautical Engineering, Astronautics, Astronomy, Astrophysics, Biomedical Engineering, Ceramic Engineering, Ceramics, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science*, Earth and Planetary Science, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Geology, Geophysics, Industrial Engineering, Materials Engineering, Materials Science, Mathematics (Pure or Applied), Applied Mechanics, Engineering Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Metallurgy, Meteorology, Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Engineering Physics, Oceanography, Optical Engineering, Physics, Applied Physics, Engineering Physics, Space Science, Structural Engineering, Welding Engineering or other appropriate physical science or engineering field. Degrees in engineering technology are not considered to be qualifying for this position. *Note: Curriculum must include 30 semester hours of course work in a combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science. Of the 30 semester hours, 15 must be in any combination of statistics and mathematics which includes differential and integral calculus.
