POSITION SUMMARY: Serve as a Fire Protection Engineer performing risk analysis and checking for fire hazards, developing fire protection strategies that can be used for various facilities, consulting on technical requirements for code adherence, and preparing and maintaining fire safety systems. The incumbent will work with other engineers and management to report all issues and fix any potential problems. To perform this job successfully, a Fire Protection Engineer must be able to perform each essential job function as listed below: Provide engineering review, coordination, and oversight of operations and maintenance, repair, and construction work Oversee and coordinate activities with the trade shops, including prioritization of work, review of ongoing projects, and inspection of installed equipment Oversee and coordinate work orders, service orders, and projects Develop cost estimates, documents, and reports Coordinate energy program and analyzing utility costs Provide after-hours engineering services in the event of an emergency Manage project design and/or construction efforts, to include schedule, funding, and day-to-day project oversight Manage and evaluate construction contractor performance Integrate and coordinate projects with field personnel Evaluate, validate, and manage project change requests Provide official weekly project status reports Prepare and distribute project communication with customers, management, integrated project teams, and stakeholders Assist the client's Contracting Officer (CO) and Contracting Officer's Technical Representative (COTR) with acquisition planning, execution and administration Assist the CO and COTR with conducting pre-bid and pre-construction site visits with the COTR Provide invoice supporting information to the COTR for payment Prepare and monitor project schedules and budgets; provide technical guidance and assistance on contracting and construction-related issues; direct design efforts; recommend construction documents for approval; and provide oversight of any follow-on maintenance programs Optimize performance, cost, and schedule by ensuring project objectives are achieved on schedule and at the lowest cost compatible with user requirements Conduct design reviews with the customer Ensure timely input of all data, comments, and documentation into MAXIMO software project management tool. This requirement applies to all projects, work orders, and tasks across the project lifecycle. Ensure integration of all systems, including information technology, telephone, security, electrical, HVAC, and plumbing Prepare Contractor Performance Report (CPR) upon contract closeout MAJOR JOB ACTIVITIES: 100%. Document and communicate fire protection issues with building and maintenance professionals. Design fire detection and elimination equipment and procedures. Design of plumbing and fire protection systems for commercial interior projects Stay current on fire protection understanding through professional literature and conferences. Act as fire protection expert for governmental authorities and policy makers. Provide engineering support for senior engineering staff. Create plans, schematics, equipment selection, calculations, systems narratives, specifications, system design and layout, field investigation and construction administration. Perform design work in AutoCAD. Ability to perform site evaluations. Attend project meetings. Provide engineering support for senior engineering staff. Comply with Client standards and procedures. Operate standard office equipment, such as a computer, copy machine and printer. Function in an office environment in a stationary position approximately 50 percent of the time or more. Work well in team environments including demonstrate the ability to function independently with minimal supervision. May be required to successfully complete a thorough medical and psychological exam, a polygraph interview and an extensive background investigation. May be required to undergo successful occupational testing to include an aptitude test, writing test, personality inventory, and interview. PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES: N/A MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education: Bachelor" (TM) s degree in Fire Protection Engineering or BS in related Engineering discipline and five (5) years" (TM) fire protection engineering experience in a similar field may be substituted for degree requirement MS in Fire Protection Engineering, or related Engineering discipline with Fire Protection Engineering experience (DESIRED). Certifications: Professional Engineering (PE) registration. PE licensure in Fire Protection Engineering (REQUIRED National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (REQUIRED) Clearance: Must have a current, adjudicated, and active TS-SCI w/Poly Experience: The application of fire protection engineering concepts, building construction, NFPA) codes and standards (especially NFPA 1, 13, 14, 17, 20, 25, 30, 45, 72, 96A, 101, 801 and 2001), International Building and Fire Codes (IBC/IFC), and ES&H requirements associated with fire protection program implementation. The application of FM Global and/or other industrial property loss prevention data sheets, and OSHA's Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) listings/approvals used in the commercial built environment. Performing fire protection and life safety plan reviews of new construction and facility modifications, negotiating with project leaders, programmatic/user organizations and design agencies to achieve successful resolution of outstanding fire protection and life safety issues, performing construction inspection and approval, and observing and documenting facility and fire protection and life safety system/feature commissioning. Significant experience with regulatory compliance for facility plans (blueprints), drawings and related design documentation (eg, hydraulic calculations, fire alarm system battery calculations, clean agent design calculations, through-penetration fire stop system engineering judgements, etc.). Knowledge: US IC organizational structure. Microsoft Office tools Project Management techniques Skills: Experience with fire protection and life safety aspects applicable to chemical processes, wet chemistry and laser laboratories, radiological laboratories, high-hazard and nuclear facilities. Development and maintenance of equivalencies and exemptions to Client USG Directives, NFPA and building codes and standards, and technical standards. Experience with fire department operations, including the preparation and management of fire department baseline needs assessment (BNA) documents and recommendations, staffing requirements (eg, NFPA 1710), apparatus life-cycle planning and routine interface and coordination between Federal and municipal regulatory agencies. Demonstrated ability to coordinate and support cross-community meetings and working groups, assimilate large volumes of information and independently produce written reports. Foreign language capability desired, but not required. Abilities: Communicate well verbally and in writing at all organizational levels, especially ability to brief senior officials. Conduct or facilitate in-depth meetings over the phone as well as face-to-face.
