Summary

The Engineering and Technology Directorate, Electrical Engineering Division, Avionics and Electrical Systems Branch (Code 565) is seeking an experienced harness engineer for the Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST) project. WFIRST is a NASA observatory designed to perform wide-field imaging and slit-less spectroscopic surveys of the near infrared (NIR) sky for the community as well as direct imaging of exoplanets and debris disks using a coronagraph.

Responsibilities

  • Provide electrical harness design and engineering support for early phases of harness development including generating relevant wire lists, harness drawings, procedures, and other design documentation to support design reviews.
  • Provide harness technicians with assistance and direction in harness fabrication activities.
  • Manage schedule, cost, and technical risk through monitoring and reporting progress and performance metrics, identify issues well in advance of negative consequences, recommend corrective action to the project, and implement corrective actions.
  • Fully understanding the project electrical harness requirements and capable of translating the electrical interface control documents (ICD) to flight harness assembly drawings including the use of interim wire lists.
  • Responsible for developing FlatSat and flight harness wire lists and providing harness assembly drawings as well as maintaining flight harness mass and flight harness parts and material lists.
  • Keep track of changes in the electrical interfaces that affects the electrical harness design as well as the FlatSat and Flight wire lists and their associated assembly drawings.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Education Requirement, you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

Specialized experience is defined as professional working experience that included the following:

-Hand soldering, harnessing, and polymerics
-Requirements for Soldered Electrical and Electronic Assemblies (IPC J-STD-001ES)
-Crimping, Interconnecting Cables, Harnesses, and Wiring
-Workmanship Standards for Staking and Conformal Coating of Printed Wiring Boards and Electronic Assemblies

Basic Education Requirement: A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major study in Aeronautical Engineering, Aeronautics, Aerospace Engineering, Architecture, Astronautical Engineering, Astronautics, Astronomy, Astrophysics, Biomedical Engineering, Ceramic Engineering, Ceramics, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science*, Earth and Planetary Science, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Geology, Geophysics, Industrial Engineering,
Materials Engineering, Materials Science, Mathematics (Pure or Applied), Applied Mechanics, Engineering Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Metallurgy, Meteorology, Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Engineering Physics, Oceanography, Optical Engineering, Physics, Applied Physics, Engineering Physics, Space Science, Structural Engineering, Welding Engineering or other appropriate physical science or engineering field.

*Note: Curriculum must include 30 semester hours of course work in a combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science. Of the 30 semester hours, 15 must be in any combination of statistics and mathematics which includes differential and integral calculus.

Degrees in engineering technology are not considered to be qualifying for this position.
