Summary

About the Position: This Psychologist functions as a Clinical Health Psychologist to support the Diabetes, Obesity, and Metabolic Institute at Walter Reed National Medical Center. The Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolic Institute has a diverse patient population, and considerable opportunity for interdisciplinary interaction, and the potential for research.

Responsibilities

  • Primary duties are in the areas of Endocrinology and Bariatric Surgery through the Endocrine clinic and Surgical Service at Walter Reed National Medical Center.
  • Provide comprehensive evaluations and individual and group-based interventions for patients undergoing behavioral weight management and bariatric surgery.
  • In the diabetic population the incumbent will facilitate behavior change, address smoking cessation, and increase adherence in the medical population.
  • The psychologist functions as an active member of an interdependent, interdisciplinary team consisting of providers within various disciplines including medicine, psychology, nutrition, and exercise physiologist.
  • Diagnoses mental disorders, conducts psychological, treat mental disorders through a variety of biopsychosocial modalities and provides adjunctive interventions for treatment of medical disorders.
  • Provide direct psychological patient care, consultation services on difficult or complex cases, and education of staff and trainee supervision.
  • Collaborate and provide consultation to Medical Specialty clinics, and Surgical teams.
  • Administers, scores, interprets, and documents psychodiagnostic screeners and/or tests.
  • Knowledge of, and ability to apply, empirically validated treatments (such as cognitive-behavioral, acceptance and commitment, motivational interviewing, systems approaches, brief solution focused approaches, mindfulness groups.
  • Ability to plan, develop, implement, and lead therapeutic and educational group programs to address needs specific bariatric or diabetic populations.

  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 3 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position requires the incumbent to have tuberculosis testing.
  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position has mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons (documentation of exemption must be provided upon hire).
  • This position requires the incumbent to fulfill credentialing requirements and obtain and maintain appropriate/relevant clinical privileges.
  • This position requires that you obtain and maintain a Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Basic Requirement for Clinical Psychologist (Health):

Degree: Doctoral Degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) directly related to full professional work in clinical psychology.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

License: The Clinical Psychologist position requires a current, active, valid, unrestricted clinical license to practice Psychology independently, offered by a U.S. State, District of Columbia, commonwealth, territory or jurisdiction. (NOTE: You must provide a copy of your license with your application package.)

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes conducting psychodiagnostic evaluations for pre-transplant and pre-surgery evaluations (i.e. bariatric surgery); providing consultation services to professional staff concerning clinical assessments findings and appropriate treatment plans for patients; and providing treatment to patients of the diabetic and/or bariatric population. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-12).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
