Responsibilities

As an IT Specialist (Network Services), you will:
  • Provide network administration/configuration support; develop, maintain, and monitor the operations of a Infrastructure Operations Center; serve as a technical specialist for the local area and wide area networks within the Department of Agriculture's SCA-IT organization and operations.
  • Maintain the components and network interfaces that make up the Service Center Agencies' network (both Data and Voice) including servers, routers, switches, wireless access points, wan optimizers, gateways, circuits, VOIP, and firewalls; analyze, define, and implement network requirements.
  • Establish and manage vendor agreements; monitor vendor performance under maintenance agreements and other contractual obligations and informally arbitrate with vendors.
  • Collaborate with customer service engineers to determine causes of equipment malfunctions and to devise acceptable methods to prevent downtime occurrences; use appropriate test equipment to isolate and correct hardware/software telecommunication problems.

Qualifications

You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

Specialized Experience for GS-13: To qualify at GS-13, you must have one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the next lower grade/band (GS-12 or equivalent) in the Federal service. For this position specialized experience is defined as experience:
  • Administrating and maintaining local and wide area networks and/or data centers; AND
  • Analyzing business requirements and resolving problems related to services provided; AND
  • Analyzing operational issues to develop policies.

In addition to meeting specialized experience, individuals must have IT-related experience demonstrating each of the four competencies listed below.
  • Attention to Detail- Is thorough when performing work and conscientious about attending to detail.
  • Customer Service- Works with clients and customers (that is, any individuals who use or receive the services or products that your work unit produces, including the general public, individuals who work in the agency, other agencies, or organizations outside the Government) to assess their needs, provide information or assistance, resolve their problems, or satisfy their expectations; knows about available products and services; is committed to providing quality products and services.
  • Oral Communication- Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately.
  • Problem Solving- Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations.

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
    - A one year probationary period may be required.
    - Pass a pre-employment security investigation.
    - Must successfully complete a background investigation.
    - Complete a Declaration for Federal Employment to determine your suitability for Federal employment, at the time requested by the agency.
