Responsibilities

SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

Installing, recognizing the cause of faulty equipment and making repairs on large systems that provide for a variety of air conditioning functions such as heating, cooling, humidifying, dehumidifying, cleaning, filtering, and circulating air.

Install and repair systems used to condition the air for different kinds of structures such as warehouses large office buildings and complexes including those with areas that have special requirements such as communication, data processing, and other areas with sensitive equipment. The systems use a variety of methods of air conditioning such as mechanical compression, vapor compression, absorption, and steam jet or air cycle.

Installs, determines defects and repairs a variety of electrical equipment including but not limited to: motors, pumps, heaters, vacuum cleaners, light fixtures, conduit, wire, switches, outlets and circuit breakers. Installs or trouble shoots and repairs a variety of small and domestic heating and cooking units and systems. Checks, tests and replaces controls and thermostat. Installs and traces, locates defect and repairs a variety of cooling equipment.

Relays instructions from supervisor. Gets work started. Sets work pace. Demonstrates work methods, and provides work-related guidance. Ensures worksite materials and tools are available to complete work. Reports workplace injuries immediately to the immediate or higher level supervisor, and to the Human Resources office in the absence of the immediate supervisor.

Checks with supervisor on problems. Checks on work and meets productivity goals. Ensures employees follow security, safety and housekeeping rules. Conducts on-the-job training and instructions. Performs supervisory duties in an emergency, or short-term and nonrecurring basis.

Ensures compliance with all pertinent safety and fire regulations.

May perform the suites of subordinate maintenance workers, which would include various electrical repair and maintenance, refrigeration repair and maintenance or other duties.

Provides World Class Customer Service with an emphasis on courtesy. Assists customers and communicates positively in a friendly manner. Takes action to solve problems quickly. Alerts the higher-level supervisor, or proper point of contact for help when problems arise. Adheres to safety regulations and standards. Promptly reports any observed workplace hazards, and any injury, occupational illness, and/or property damage resulting from workplace mishaps to the immediate supervisor. Adheres to established standards of actively supporting the principles of the EEO program and prevention of sexual harassment.

May be required to work during inclement weather when the rest of the Base is closed or arrive on duty early or stay on duty after normal working hours to initiate maintenance repairs, remove snow, ice, etc.

Must operate vehicle in performance of job duties, hauling material and equipment to and from job site.

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

Mechanics use a knowledge of the refrigeration cycle of a variety of commercial and industrial systems to locate and check elements such as those that control low side and high side pressure; the temperature of the cooling units; the temperatures of the liquid and suction lines; and the running time of the various mechanisms. They check for the probability of leaks by visual and audible examination of equipment components; by applying prescribed test procedures and equipment; and by exploration of probable reasons for equipment failure. They know principles and theories of air conditioning and refrigeration such as the refrigeration cycle, heat transfer laws, the use of refrigerant tables; how to calculate airflow, and the pressure-temperature characteristics for the different systems in order to locate and repair faulty equipment swiftly and to reduce inoperative time to a minimum. They know how to locate trouble before dismantling, and to make repairs that insure proper functioning after assembly.

HVAC/ Refrigeration licensure at the Journeyman level is required. Two years' experience in related building trades required. Must have knowledge of the operation and installation of a variety of complete HVAC systems and equipment. Must be able to read, interpret and work from blue prints or sketches and be knowledgeable of basic shop mathematics.

Must possess a valid Virginia state driver's license and be capable of obtaining a government vehicle operator's license.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Leads the work of NA-8 maintenance workers and one NA-10 Maintenance Mechanic/ electrician/refrigeration worker. Passes on instruction from supervisors, starts maintenance workers on their work, sets the pace, demonstrates proper work methods, checks work while in progress, answers employees' questions.

PHYSICAL EFFORT:

The work requires frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, reaching, kneeling, pushing, pulling, carrying, crawling and climbing. Frequent lifting, carrying and setting up of materials and equipment weighing up to 100 pounds is also required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work may be performed either inside or outside, occasionally in inclement weather. Frequently exposed to sudden temperature changes, dust, dirt, fumes, spray and loud noises. Subject to cuts, burns, bruises, electrical shocks or injuries occurring from lifting heavy pieces of lumber/equipment or in fall from ladder/scaffolds. Required to wear supplied protective clothing/equipment.
