Fairfax County is the largest health jurisdiction in Virginia and in the National Capital Region including about 1.2 million people; the population is demographically diverse with 30% being foreign born. Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) is a progressive public health leader providing services that promote population health, protect public health and the environment, and ensure residents' access to health services and information.

Under general supervision of the Senior Public Health Nutritionist, the Nutritionist Assistant II provides nutrition services to participants in the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program. This position is located at a Fairfax County WIC site. Certifies eligibility of participants, determines nutritional risks, and prescribes appropriate food packages. Conducts dietary assessments and obtains clinical data. Provides nutrition education and counseling to low-risk clients. Refers high-risk clients to the Public Health Nutritionist. Documents all certification and nutrition activities. Travel to other WIC office locations may be required on an as needed basis.

This position may be underfilled as a Nutritionist Assistant I; the underfill requirements are stated bellow in the Employment Standards section.

Note: This is a grant funded position.

Employment Standards

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following:

High school graduation or a GED issued by a department of education; plus six hours of nutrition, dietetics, community health, biology, chemistry, sociology, and/or a related coursework.; plus one year of customer service experience in community health, social services, public health environment, nutrition, and/or related field.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
  • Competent Professional Authority (CPA) certification or other related certification.
  • Valid driver's license
  • AED - Required within 60 days
  • CPR - Required within 60 days
UNDERFILL REQUIREMENTS:
Nutritionist Assistant I, Grade S15 ($39,270.61 - $65,450.53 Annually)

Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following:

High school graduation or a G.E.D. issued by a state department of education plus one year of customer service experience.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a Child Protective Services Registry, and a driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Preferred candidate will have a college degree in nutrition, dietetics, or a related field.
  • Previous WIC experience preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and deal tactfully with clients of diverse ethnic, cultural, and economic backgrounds.
  • Models outstanding customer service skills with the ability to establish and maintain effective and cooperative relationships.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and other information systems such as an electronic health records system.
  • Bilingual Spanish/English a plus.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to walk, stand, sit, bend, kneel, reach, climb stairs and carry equipment or young children up to 25 pounds in weight. Uses hands to grasp, handle or feel. Visual acuity to read data on a computer monitor. Ability to operate keyboard driven equipment and drive a vehicle. Ability to communicate with others verbally and in writing. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
