Specific duties are as follows:
  • Participates in operational and administrative functions related to refuse vehicle weighing, billing information processing, and permit issuance at the I-95 Complex and/or the I-66 Complex.
  • Determines the routine material type and origin of waste loads at county-operated waste disposal facilities.
  • Inspects waste to determine acceptability for disposal or recycling.
  • Inspects refuse collection vehicles for compliance with county regulations.
  • Obtains disposal permit numbers, enters the appropriate information into the computer system, confirms weights, determines direct sale or third party billing, and determines disposal fee.
  • Collects fees, including cash and adheres to the Fairfax County procedures governing the handling of cash and checks.
  • Reviews routine monthly invoices for accuracy prior to mailing.
  • Processes and issues routine refuse collection and disposal permits.
  • Provides routine information and answers questions from the public and commercial hauling firms concerning the disposal and recycling of materials.
Responsibilities:
Engages in safe working practices and complies with Solid Waste safety programs and guidelines. Complies with the DPWES Safety Competencies.

Note: The salary offer for the position will not exceed the mid-point of the advertised salary range. The functional area is administrative and financial.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience and training equivalent to high school graduation and two years of experience providing administrative support in the assigned functional area(s).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience providing technical support in a refuse operation(s) or a related field. At least two years of experience working with the general public. Prior reconciliation and cash handling experience. Excellent communication skills, computer and data entry experience.

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
A valid driver's license.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The position duties are of a sedentary nature. However, the employee may be required to do some walking, standing, bending and carrying of items under 15 pounds in weight. Work assignments may also require that the employee make site visits and inspections. All duties are completed with or without reasonable accommodation.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee is required to complete a criminal background check and driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.
