Job Description:

The Retail Operations team at the Kennedy Center is responsible for ensuring an excellent guest experience by providing superb customer service to worldwide clientele. We are seeking an outgoing, reliable Assistant Supervisor to join our Gift Shops team! In the Kennedy Center's Gift Shops, we sell a wide range of historical and performing arts memorabilia, music, books, fashion merchandise, and other gifts related to Broadway musicals, opera, classical music, and more! The successful candidate for this position will love customer interaction, processing sales in a performing arts environment, and will have a flexible schedule, as evening and weekend work are required in coordination with performance schedules.

Duties and Responsibilities:

20% Acts as a model sales associate for all staff and volunteers; opens and closes shops in a timely and orderly fashion each business day.

10% Ensures the accuracy of all cash handling, maintaining of standards, procedures and policy for cash handling on their shift and documenting all discrepancies and informing Manager and/or Assistant Managers of any discrepancies.

15% Provides support and incentive for others on shift to perform and complete assigned duties.

10% Disseminates information on and encourages good sales practices from sales associates.

10% Assists with proper shift change procedure and maintenance of daily reconciliation sheets; assists in making sure that all cash drawers have ample change to function throughout each shift. If closing, ensures that all registers balance and that paper work and monies are dropped properly in the safe.

10% Assists with merchandising store items.

5% Provides input to Assistant Manager on staff schedules for approximately 80 employees and volunteers on a weekly basis. Updates schedules as needed for employee call outs and volunteer days off. Enters all changes in schedules.

5% Assists with re-stocking any and all merchandise that needs replenishment. Orders from or goes to warehouse to retrieve necessary merchandise. Shares customer and requests with Buyers.

5% Meets regularly with Assistant Managers and Retail Operations Manager.

5% Assists with transfers out or in merchandise as necessary and/or directed. Assists with "Transfer In" transactions and completing postings.

N/A In addition to the above, all duties, responsibilities, and expectations that apply to the Sales Associate position apply to this position. This includes generating sales, cash register operations, and maintaining excellent customer service in accordance to Kennedy Center standards.

Key Qualifications:

  • High school education
  • Minimum of six months as a sales associate and/or closer at the Kennedy Center, OR one year of comparable experience in high-volume, fast-paced retail.
  • Computer and tech savvy. Experience with and strong comfort level using iPads, Square and web-based technology and devices,

Physical Demands:

  • Standing for long periods of time
  • Moving quickly from one area to another
  • Sitting at very short intervals to use computer - dexterity with hands/fingers
  • Ability to bend, stoop, crouch, and reach with hands and arms.
  • Frequently lifts, carries, or otherwise moves and positions merchandise and object up to 30 pounds

Work Environment:

  • The work environment is typical of a gift shop. The shops are clean and well cared for. The back office of retail operations does not have any impediments for the staff.
  • Must have flexible schedule to work days, evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • Evening and weekend work is required in coordination with performance schedules.

Pay: $15.50 per hour
