Minimum Qualifications

Education
  • Associate's degree, or vocational or technical school degree in Electronics or Electrical

Experience
  • A minimum of eight (8) years' experience in Train Control Maintenance or Engineering, to include a minimum of one (1) year of supervisory experience

Certification/Licensure
  • Possession of or ability to rapidly obtain and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator's permit from jurisdiction of residence

Preferred
  • Education
    • A Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field
  • Experience
    • Experience in railway electro-mechanical signal engineering, design, installation and/or maintenance

Summary

The Senior Train Control Engineer is responsible for design and engineering work related to the development and maintenance of the Authority's Automatic Train Control (ATC) system. The incumbent also supports the procurement and testing of the ATC and, trains and supervises teams executing associated work activities.

Essential Functions
  • Supervises and directs ATC engineering staff in the performance of maintenance engineering tasks and support activities. Coordinates and adjusts resources according to established priorities and project timelines, ensuring worker safety and the protection of train movement are maintained constantly.
  • Participates in and represents ATC Engineering (ATCE) in meetings and discussions with both internal and external stakeholders, such as, consultants, vendors, and peer colleagues to exchange information and coordinate interdepartmental and outside activities.
  • Performs administrative tasks related to supervision and project management to ensure both timely completion of tasks (e.g. payroll and performance evaluations) and to update project status for management.
  • Monitors the preparation of design specifications and Scopes of Work (SOW) for the procurement of ATC and related subsystems, to ensure the advertised specifications, SOW and cost estimates meet ATC design and procurement requirements.
  • Creates and/or reviews Engineering Modification Instructions (EMI), Temporary Configuration Plans (TCP), and Engineering Bulletins to modify or update the system with new functionality or equipment. Ensures documents comply with ATC-2000 (System Integrity), ATC-4000 (Configuration Management Plan) and WMATA policies.
  • Prepares analyses, evaluations and other reports to justify change orders to ATC contracts and new designs in correlation with operations and maintenance needs to ensure designs and modifications meet ATC technical requirements, operational and maintenance goals and policies.
  • Coordinates with other engineering disciplines to provide an optimal level of safe performance and reliability for the ATC and other transit systems that are interdependent on one another.
  • Evaluates proposed ATC system design requirements, in relation to elements of the existing system, to ensure compatibility and to ensure that received proposals for wayside systems are compatible with existing legacy equipment or meet revised specifications.
