Arlington County is an exciting, innovative local government entity located in Northern Virginia. We are seeking a bright, highly motivated individual for an exciting one-year Internship in the Department of Parks & Recreation. This position offers a career opportunity for a qualified individual with little or no previous professional work experience to help them prepare for a career in their field of work. This Internship will provide a new college graduate or currently enrolled graduate students with an in-depth, hands-on learning opportunity in an area critical to supporting local government initiatives while participating in a developmental and training cohort with peers.

Internship

Over the course of a year, the Intern will work under the mentorship and supervision of senior staff members to gain valuable on-the-job training and real-world work experience while participating in an internship cohort program. They will support the County's efforts to consistently work toward greater efficiency and effectiveness by offering improved processes and fresh ideas, and by leveraging smart technologies, while becoming familiar with the public-sector work environment as a viable and fulfilling career path.

Program Participation

2018 and 2019 *college graduates with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and who have no professional work experience in the area related to the internship are welcome to apply. Applications will be considered from candidates who have earned a Bachelor's or Master's degree in 2018 or 2019 prior to the start date of the Internship or who are currently enrolled in a Master's degree program related to the internship.

Public Relations Intern
Department of Parks and Recreation

Creative, hard-working and energized recent graduate is invited to join the Public Relations Unit in Arlington County's Department of Parks and Recreation as an Intern for Public Relations. Our unit promotes all things fun and engaging in Arlington: playgrounds, parks, trails, nature centers, July 4, County Fair, camps, recreation classes, and more. We report on the great work of environmental stewards, advocates for people at risk, amazing designers who make environmentally sound and creative facilities, and others who come to work each day to make Arlington a great place to live, work, and play.

The Public Relations Intern will support the implementation and management of a comprehensive, integrated public relations program that includes: media relations, digital communications, publication development, civic engagement, graphic design, internal communications, community outreach, and event management. The Intern will work across the entire unit, gaining experience in every aspect of public relations. Work will vary depending on the currents needs of the organization. Aside from the responsibilities listed below, the intern will be responsible for completing various long-term projects, which could include: developing department-wide photo library; researching park histories; developing displays to support Arlington's African American history; and marketing research.

Under the supervision of a Mentor, the Intern will assist in the following:
  • Develop and edit articles for print and digital publications, eNews, calendar listings, fact sheets and talking points following the AP and Arlington County Style Manual;
  • Provide daily media clips on topics related to Arlington Parks & Recreation;
  • Marketing Plan process and development;
  • Create public information or educational materials to disseminate program information to the public, citizens, business, interest groups and other stakeholders;
  • Serve with DPR event management to assist with designing special events, coordinating event publicity, and assisting with event logistics;
  • Develop and give presentations to groups regarding projects, procedures or general information about departmental programs or initiatives;
  • Engage DPR staff to develop interesting, engaging and accurate press releases, flyers, web and print content using InDesign, Illustrator or Publisher;
  • Place new or edited content in WordPress, reviewing migrated content for quality assurance;
  • Copy edit 55+ Guide, Enjoy Arlington , various eNews and other publications as needed;
  • Creates photos, images, text and video to post on DPR social media to support the department's facilities, events, programs and services;
  • Extrapolate social media and web statistics/analytics;
  • Provide direct services to customers; analyze effectiveness of services, and make recommendations for enhancements; and
  • Use current office technology to compile and develop reports including the analysis and synthesis of moderately complex data.


Selection Criteria

*Applications will be accepted from candidates graduating with an undergraduate degree no later than August 2019 and from candidates currently pursuing a Master's Degree in their field.

Minimums:
  • Must have earned a Bachelor's or Master's degree in 2018 or 2019 prior to the start date of the Internship or are currently enrolled in a Master's degree program related to the internship;
  • Interns may not have professional work experience related to the internship;
  • G.P.A. of 3.0 or above. Applicants may be asked to provide certified official transcripts.

Degree Requirements : Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Public Affairs or related field.

Desirables: Preference may be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following:
  • Strong ability in the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong communication skills specifically in writing, editing, oral communications, digital communications, grammar, formatting, layout and design.
  • Take good photographs and videos and upload edited images as needed.
  • Experience with WordPress, web development, social marketing, Final Cut Pro, Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator or Premier, and creating presentations in Prezi and Windows Movie Maker a plus.


Special Requirements

Applicants must possess valid driver's license prior to the first day of hire.

Additional Information

Work Hours: 40 hours/week. Monday - Friday. Some flexibility. Weekend and evenings hours will be flexed into the schedule to support special events.

Permanent, Full-Time Appointments
All jobs are permanent, full-time appointments unless otherwise stated in the announcement. The following benefits are available:

Paid Leave : Vacation leave is earned at the rate of four hours biweekly. Leave accrual increases every three years until eight hours of leave are earned biweekly for twelve or more years of service. Sick leave is earned at the rate of four hours biweekly. There are eleven paid holidays each year.

Health and Dental Insurance : Three group health insurance plans are offered - a network open access plan, a point-of-service plan, and a health maintenance organization. A group dental insurance plan is also offered. The County pays a significant portion of the premium for these plans for employees and their dependents. A discount vision plan is provided for eye care needs.

Life Insurance : A group term policy of basic life insurance is provided at no cost to employees. The benefit is one times annual salary. Additional life insurance is available with rates based on the employee's age and smoker/non-smoker status.

Retirement : The County offers three vehicles to help you prepare for retirement: a defined benefit plan, a defined contribution plan (401(a)), and a deferred compensation plan (457). The defined benefit plan provides a monthly retirement benefit based on your final average salary and years of service with the County. You contribute a portion of your salary on a pre-tax basis to this plan. General employees contribute 4% of pay; uniformed public safety employees contribute 7.5% of pay. Employees become vested in the plan at five years of service. The County also contributes to this plan.

For general employees, the County also contributes 4.2% of pay to a defined contribution plan (401(a)) . The County also matches your 457 contribution, up to $20 per pay period, in this plan. The 457 deferred compensation plan allows you to set aside money on either a pre-tax (457b) or post-tax (457 Roth) basis up to the IRS annual limit. New employees are automatically enrolled with a pre-tax contribution equal to 2% of your base pay.

Other Benefits: The County also offers health, dependent care, and parking flexible spending accounts; long-term care insurance; tuition assistance; transit and walk/bike to work subsidies; a college savings plan; wellness programs; training opportunities; and a variety of other employee benefits.

Permanent, Part-Time Appointments:
Part time employees who work ten or more hours per week receive paid leave and benefits in proportion to the number of hours worked per week.

Limited Term Appointments:
Benefits are the same as permanent appointments except that the employees do not achieve permanent status.

Temporary Regular Appointments:
Temporary regular employees who work 30 hours or more per week are eligible for health, dental, and basic life insurance as described above. They are also eligible for vacation, sick leave, and paid holidays.

Temporary Seasonal and Occasional Appointments:
Temporary employees who work on a seasonal basis or variable hours receive sick leave, but do not normally receive other paid leave or benefits. Exceptions are noted in individual announcements.
