Responsibilities

  • You will perform internal inspection of boilers to determine if tubes are free of scale and corrosion.
  • You will troubleshoot heating boilers, heating systems, and hot water systems to locate malfunctions.
  • You will service equipment by cleaning filters, strainers, orifices, ignition electrodes, and adjusting dampers.
  • You will test the operation of boiler systems to identify malfunctions and potential problems.

Qualifications

The Screen-out Element for this position is: Ability to perform the duties of a Boiler Plant Equipment Mechanic without more than normal supervision: 1) Maintain a variety of domestic heating equipment and systems such as oil fueled heaters, hot air furnaces, heating boilers, and other systems and equipment with similar heat sources, controls and circulating methods; 2) Use technical manuals, manufacturers manuals, and special instructions to determine whether replacement, service, or repair of key parts or components of the heating systems are required; 3) Use shop mathematics to compute fuel consumption rates, heat generating units, and air to fuel ratios and conversions 4) Use standard and specialized hand and power tools such as adjustable wrenches, pneumatic hammers, pipe cutting equipment, and drill presses to properly maintain equipment

PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Moderate lifting up to 40 pounds is required. If a heavier lift is required, it must not be attempted without assistance. Must be able to work at a rapid pace for a short period of time. Occasionally required to perform work to stooping, bending and reaching while in cramped and uncomfortable positions and by walking, kneeling, crouching, and crawling. Must be able to climb ladders and scaffolds to perform work at various heights. Normal vision is required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Some work is performed outside and may require exposure to prevailing weather conditions. Working conditions in this position vary with a portion performed in relatively pleasant surroundings and a portion performed on rooftops, in equipment rooms, under buildings and in confined spaces. Subject to perform work in areas with high noise levels where ear protection is required. Working in very hot and cold environments, poorly ventilated and lighted areas is occasionally required and in some instances work in these conditions is for the duration of the shift. The incumbent may be exposed to fumes, dust, dirt, grease and oil, and is subject to the possibility of scrapes, cuts, bruises, contusions, burns, electric shock and eye hazards.
