Responsibilities

  • This is an open continuous announcement. Applicants will be referred with an initial cut off date of July 8, 2019.
  • After the initial cut off, applicants will be referred every month as follows: August 8, 2019, September 9, 2019, October 9, 2019 and November 4, 2019.

  • This position(s) is located in the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM), in Rockville or Laurel, Maryland.
  • As a Mathematical Statistician, assess the strengths and weaknesses of mathematical and statistical methods, procedures, inference and concepts involved in regulated products, submissions, applications, and/or special studies.
  • You will analyze statistical data to determine the safety and/or effectiveness of regulated products.

Qualifications

In order be eligible for the position of Mathematical Statistician, (GS-1529-11/12/13) , you must meet the following requirements:

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
Possess a degree that includes 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, of which at least 12 semester hours were in mathematics and 6 semester hours were in statistics.

Courses acceptable toward meeting the mathematics course requirements must have included at least four of the following: differential calculus, integral calculus, advance calculus, theory of equations, vector analysis, advanced algebra, linear algebra, mathematical logic, differential equations, or any other advanced course in mathematics for which one of these was a prerequisite. Courses in mathematical statistics or probability theory with a prerequisite of elementary calculus or more advanced courses will be accepted toward meeting the mathematics requirements, with the provision that the same course cannot be counted toward both the mathematics and the statistics requirement.

OR

A combination of education and experience, at least 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics to include at least 12 hours in mathematics and 6 semester hours in statistics as shown above plus appropriate experience or additional education.

The experience offered in combination with educational courses to meet the requirements mentioned above should include evidence of statistical work such as (a) sampling, (b) collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, and (c) applying known statistical techniques to data such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple and multiple correlation, analysis of variance, and tests of significance.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS FOR GS-11
Possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience includes applying statistical methods and theories to the review and analysis of scientific data from controlled human, animal, and laboratory experiments OR 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree. If qualifying based on experience, this experience must be reflected in your resume. Volunteer experience can be used as qualifying experience.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS FOR GS-12
Possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience includes applying statistical methods and theories to the review and analysis of scientific data generated from controlled human, animal, and laboratory experiments; and providing statistical conclusions or recommendations on regulatory and compliance issues. This experience must be reflected in your resume. Volunteer experience can be used as qualifying experience.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS FOR GS-13
Possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience includes applying statistical methods and theories to the review and analysis of scientific data generated from controlled human, animal, and laboratory experiments; providing statistical conclusions or recommendations on regulatory and compliance issues and providing statistical expertise in support of the development of guidance and policy documents.. This experience must be reflected in your resume. Volunteer experience can be used as qualifying experience.
