Tenure-Track Assistant or Associate Professor of Public History

The George Mason University Department of History and Art History invites applications for a Tenure-Track Assistant or Associate Professor of Public History, content field open. The department is home to the award-winning Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media and has highly ranked History PhD/MA and Art History MA programs. George Mason is a large public university located in the Washington DC suburbs, with easy access to museums, memorials, and archives in the nation's capital; this unique location affords faculty members the opportunity to engage in research at, and forge partnerships with, these institutions. Faculty members have affiliations with programs across the university including African-American Studies, Cultural Studies, Islamic Studies, Women and Gender Studies, the Honors College, and Global Affairs, as well as with the Smithsonian Institution. Responsibilities: Candidates for this position will have experience in the development, implementation, and management of heritage site and/or museum exhibition programs, significant digital public history projects, or other public history efforts; grant-writing; teaching public history; as well as an active scholarly agenda in the field of public history, broadly defined. While we encourage applications from candidates with demonstrated digital humanities skills, they are not required for this position.

The position carries a 2/2 teaching load and the successful candidate will contribute to the department's undergraduate and graduate public history concentrations both in the classroom and by expanding opportunities for student research and/or internships and community engagement. The candidate will have broad latitude in developing an array of undergraduate and graduate courses in public history according to their practical experience in the field and pedagogical/research interests, and will have the opportunity to mentor PhD/MA students.
