The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry, within the College of Science (COS) at George Mason University, invites applications from outstanding candidates for a tenure-track faculty position in physical/materials chemistry beginning Fall 2020. George Mason University is an affirmative action/equal employment opportunity employer and is dedicated to recruiting a diverse faculty community. We welcome all qualified applicants to apply, including women, minorities, individuals with disabilities and veterans.

Exceptional candidates in all areas of experimental physical chemistry of materials will be considered. We seek candidates who will contribute to building a nationally and internationally recognized Materials Chemistry research program, bringing expertise in computational materials chemistry/science or materials synthesis and processing in areas such as materials for sustainability, materials to enable quantum revolution, materials for biomedicine, biomaterials, polymers, and materials-related food science/process engineering. Applicants must show promise of excellence in scholarship and have demonstrated the potential to develop and support an independent, innovative research program and to engage in interdisciplinary collaboration. Applicants should also demonstrate an ability to teach and train effectively at both undergraduate and graduate levels. We are particularly interested in attracting academically and culturally diverse candidates, especially those who can contribute to the growing diversity and excellence of the community through their scholarship, teaching, and service.

About the Department: The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry has research labs and faculty distributed over three campuses addressing two primary research thrust areas: Fairfax campus (sustainability - physical, solid state inorganic, organic, and analytical chemistry), the Science and Technology campus in Manassas (biomedical - biochemistry, synthetic organic and medicinal chemistry), and the Potomac Environmental Research & Education Center (sustainability - environmental chemistry). The research funding portfolio includes the Department of Defense, National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Science Foundation (NSF), other government and non-profit agencies, and private industry. Faculty in the department have close collaborations with researchers from a number of local and regional institutions, including the United States Army Medical Research Institute for Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID), Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR), NIH, Food and Drug Administration, Naval Research Laboratory, National Institute of Standard and Technology (NIST), the United States Geological Survey (USGS), and Inova Health System among others. Responsibilities: Teaching duties will include undergraduate and graduate level courses in physical chemistry, which may include quantum mechanics, spectroscopy, and specialized topics within the candidate's research portfolio. Excellent collaborative opportunities among departmental faculty members, University-wide faculty, and neighboring federal laboratories, such as the Naval Research Laboratory and the National Institute for Standards and Technology are available and strongly encouraged.

Required Qualifications: Completion of a PhD in Physical Chemistry, Chemical Physics, Materials Science or a closely related discipline prior to starting this appointment; the ability to deliver engaging and high-quality instruction in physical chemistry courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels; and a commitment to conducting research with graduate (PhD and MS) and undergraduate students.
