We are seeking an Engineer/Architect Student Trainee who will assist professional engineers and/or architects and admin staff in the operations of the Capitol Power Plant.

Responsibilities

This position is located in the Architect of the Capitol, Utilities and Power Plant Operations, Engineering Division. The trainee will receive increasingly more responsible assignments to provide training and development in their respective engineering discipline. The trainee will have non-competitive promotion up to the GS-9 level.

Responsibilities:
  • Performs well-defined tasks in various aspects of engineering and architecture. Receives formal training and on-the-job instruction designed to familiarize the trainee with the functions and operations of the Capitol Power Plant and to provide experience in the application of architectural/engineering knowledge to projects at the plant. Specific duties are dependent upon the occupational specialty that corresponds to the college major.
  • Assists professional level architects or engineers or other staff in routine and progressively responsible duties which are directly related to the student's academic studies and occupational career goals.
  • Performs specified arithmetic computations using engineering software and programs, standard tables, or other engineering practice.
  • Supports engineering project team(s) and accomplishes assigned tasks.
  • Operates and makes adjustments to a variety of instruments and equipment.
  • Gathers and complies data from records, specifications and drawings. Recognizes and resolves readily apparent errors.
  • Creates drawings of simple facilities and equipment from sketches and models or marked up prints when the details fit a familiar pattern and are easily visualized.
  • Follows all relevant safety rules, regulations and standard operating procedures and comply with all OSHA safety rules and regulations.

NOTE ON PAY RATES - Per AOC policy, sophomores will receive GS-4 pay rates and juniors will receive GS-5 pay rates.

Students must meet the following requirements:
  • Attend an accredited college or university on at least a half-time basis, but must have completed at least 30 semester hours.
  • Have at least a 2.9 grade point average (GPA) or higher on a scale of 4.0 upon initial appointment.
  • Must have successfully completed introductory coursework if a student attends a professional school.
  • Must be at least 16 years of age upon entry into the program.
  • Must complete a Cooperative Agreement between the school, student and the AOC.


Qualifications

To qualify, you must currently be a 2nd-year (Sophomore) or 3rd-year (Junior) college or university student majoring in engineering or architecture with a grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.9 on a 4.0 scale. Must meet their university or college Co-operative Education Program requirements.

Education

To be eligible, you must currently be a 2nd-year (Sophomore) or 3rd-year (Junior) college or university student majoring in engineering or architecture.

It is important to understand that your assignment requires continuing pursuit of a bachelor's degree in engineering or architecture. Changing your curriculum to any other major may preclude your employment in this student trainee position. If the student employee's GPA falls below 2.9 at any time during employment, an academic improvement period to raise the GPA may be extended by the AOC.
