Responsibilities

  • You will lead and conduct both fundamental and applied research in the area of atomic frequency references and atomic clocks.
  • You will lead and conduct applied research in connection with the in-house development of advanced atomic frequency standards with the ultimate goal producing space qualified clocks for the Global Positioning System (GPS) and other space programs.
  • You will perform research in the areas of laser-cooled microwave and optically interrogated frequency standards using laser technology such as laser cooling and trapping of alkali and alkali earth elements, ion trapping and optical lattice trapping.
  • You will provide design, control system and data analysis support to the Advanced Space Precision Navigation and Timing (PNT) Branch Clock Test Facility.
  • You will generate and evaluate contract specifications for frequency standards and associated equipment.

Qualifications

This position has a selective placement factor that will be used to screen out ineligible candidates. The selective placement factor is: Demonstrated experience in the development of advanced atom physics experiments or advanced atomic devices that are applicable to atomic frequency standards (direct experience preferred), including mastery of techniques of laser-cooling of atomic or ionic species, ultra-low noise clock lasers, and femtosecond self-reference optical frequency combs or other advanced laser systems used to interrogate or manipulate atomic states.

In addition, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05/10 grade level or pay NP-02 band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector performing most or all of the following duties: 1) managing and participating in complex atomic physics experiments to determine unknown properties that could be used to affect the performance and reliability of atomic clocks; 2) applying theoretical and experimental investigations in both microwave and optically interrogated atoms; 3) devising, developing and writing software to calibrate and analyze atomic physics experimental data; 4) designing and using electronics associated with atomic physics experiments necessary to build atomic clock engineering prototypes; and, 5) preparing scientific reports and defending ideas to higher authority.

Education

You must meet the following Basic Education requirement to be eligible for the 1310 series: Completion of a Bachelor's Degree (or more advanced degree) in Physics; or related degree that included at least 24 semester hours in physics. OR, a combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in physics totaling at least 24 semester hours, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
In either case, the courses must have included a fundamental course in general physics and, in addition, courses in any two of the following: electricity and magnetism, heat, light, mechanics, modern physics, and sound.

If you have a Master's or equivalent graduate degree in Physics, this may be substituted to meet the Minimum Qualifications for this position. However, you will still need to meet the Selective Placement Factor and Specialized experience as stated above.
