Salary:

GS-2: $25,568 (Step 01) to $32,175 (Step 10);

GS-3: $27,897 (Step 01) to $36,266 (Step 10);

NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01.

Responsibilities

The USGS Virginia-West Virginia Water Science Center is seeking undergraduate level students working towards a degree.

As a Student Trainee (Administration) you will serve in a trainee capacity, performing routine and recurring development assignments to acquire knowledge and understanding of functions, principles, practices, and methods used in the area of Administration.

Duties include:
  • The incumbent will provide assistance to senior administrative personnel in the preparation of a variety of administrative material required to support the organization.
  • Assists in recording information necessary to provide data for internal reports. Receives basic training in the development of reports from previously recorded data.
  • Receives training in the preparation of time cards; requisitions for supplies; equipment and services; travel authorizations and vouchers; property transfer forms; journal vouchers and related transactions.
  • Receives training in handling a variety of day-to-day basic, practical administrative problems

In order to be eligible for an appointment under the Pathways Internship Program:
  • You must be a student accepted for enrollment or enrolled in a degree or certificate program on a full- or half-time basis as defined by the school (certificate program means post-secondary education, in a qualifying
    educational institution, equivalent to at least one academic year of full-time study that is part of an accredited college-level, technical, trade, vocational, or business school curriculum); and
  • Enrollment is with a qualifying educational institution such as a high school or state-approved home school; or accredited technical or vocational school; a 2- or 4-year college or university; a graduate or professional
    school (e.g., law school, medical school); or a post-secondary home school curriculum.
  • Students currently enrolled must be in good academic standing maintaining a 2.0 grade point average on a cumulative basis.
  • You must continue to meet these eligibility requirements throughout the duration of your appointment under the Pathways Internship Prgm.

Applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-02 level:

**Three months of general experience that is defined as progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled.

**OR high school graduation or the equivalent.

Applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-03 level:

**Six months of general experience that is defined as progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled.

**OR one full year of successfully completed education above the high school level in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite.

**OR completion of an intensive, specialized course of study of less than 1 year may meet in full the experience requirements for the GS-3 level. Courses of this type normally require completion of up to 40 hours per week of instruction rather than 20 hours per week, and are usually of at least 3 months in duration. Such courses may have been obtained through a variety of programs such as those offered by business or technical schools, and through military training programs.
**To be creditable, such a course must have been designed specifically as career preparation for the work of the position being filled, and must have provided the applicant with the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to do the work.
