Summary

This position is located in the Facilities Management Service at the Washington DC Medical Center in Washington DC. Industrial Equipment Mechanic will be independently performing the following responsibilities on medical center/hospital equipment associated with Medical and Patient Care, Laboratory, Surgical, Dietetic Kitchen, Dental Laboratory and Service equipment, Industrial Mechanical and Utility Systems, and Housekeeping equipment.

Responsibilities

Major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Install, modify, troubleshoot, maintain, test, calibrate, adjust, overhaul, and repair wide variety hospital equipment to include but not limited to hospital beds and stretchers, sterilizers, steam and chemical, commercial kitchen equipment, EMS equipment, Automatic Door systems
  • Troubleshoot major and complex systems (i.e., conveyor systems and pneumatic tube systems, Emergency Generators, Automatic Transfer Switches and all associated paralleling systems and controls and switchgear, etc.)
  • Use and maintain all tools of the Industrial Equipment and Mechanic trade
  • Interpret instructions - manufacturers or local - for the installation and operation of equipment. Independently performs necessary repairs modifications and fabrications
  • Interpret and apply blueprints, schematic drawings, wiring diagrams, technical manuals and specifications
  • Make mathematical computations and use shop formulas associated with requirements or wiring equipment
  • Determine the nature and extent of repairs by checking equipment for malfunctions, broken/worn parts, leaks, feedback, interference, and tracing wires
  • Perform electric and gas welding; flame cutting, sweat and silver soldering of various metals; use of pressure gauges for hydraulic systems and other pressure systems
  • Use of electric and electronic test equipment (i.e., voltmeters, millimeters, ohmmeters, oscilloscopes, megometers, ammeter's, current, tracers, motor analyzers, halogen leak detector's, electrical safety analyzers, micrometers, calipers)
  • Maintain Plant log books and records and provide proper shift turnover to oncoming Operator
  • Use of a variety mechanical tools and equipment to include but not limited to: Wrenches: impact and torque, pliers, pullers, lifts, vise types table and stand alone, cutting equipment electrical and mechanical, welders heliarc, mig and tig types
  • Inspect facilities/equipment regularly to insure proper functioning, or to diagnose trouble
  • Search for system and equipment leaks mechanical and electrical, and replace a variety of electric, electromechanical and electronic components
  • Act in an interoperability capacity/role in terms of backup coverage and assistance as an electrician to support as directed by the Electrical Systems Supervisor or General Foreman, Utilities Systems
  • Performs other duties as assigned

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element (i.e., Ability to do the work of the position [Industrial Equipment Mechanic] without more than normal supervision. This position installs, modifies, maintains, tests, calibrates, adjusts, overhauls, and repair wide variety medical center/hospital equipment associated with Medical and Patient Care, Laboratory, Surgical, Dietetic Kitchen, Dental Laboratory and Service equipment, Industrial Mechanical and Utility Systems, and Housekeeping equipment. In making your response, consider that your past and/or current training/experience must have provided knowledge of troubleshooting mechanical electrical equipment, pipefitting, intermediate to mastery electrician, and acetylene/electric/heliarc welding; Skill in operating the following equipment: tool lathes, grinders, drill presses, saws, bending machines, pipe machines, gas and electric welders, hand power tools and various carpentry tools; Ability to operate lifts: forklifts and man lifts (less than 10,000 lbs. capacity), pickup trucks and a variety of other types of machinery; Skill in installing, modifying, troubleshooting, maintaining, testing, calibrating, adjusting, overhauling, and repairing wide variety hospital equipment to include but not limited to hospital beds and stretchers, sterilizers, steam and chemical, commercial kitchen equipment, Environmental Management Service oriented equipment, and Automatic Door systems; Skill in managing and examining minor to major electrical systems components to include commercial and redundant power operations; and Skill in troubleshooting major and complex systems such as conveyor systems and pneumatic tube systems, etc.), which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: This position requires regular walking tours of the plant, main hospital, and out buildings to conduct inspections of equipment which include some lifting, kneeling, standing, climbing and stooping. Maintenance and repairs frequently require working in awkward and cramped positions and lifting, carrying or pushing parts and equipment weighing up to fifty (50) pounds. Frequent standing, walking, and climbing are required while checking equipment. Majority of core work hours will be from 7 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Work is primarily in heated buildings, but some work is required outside in inclement weather. Exposed to dirt, dust, heat, smoke, burns, cuts, bruises, and toxic vapors. Position requires suitability and reliability clearance, the wearing of level protective clothing, and periodic complete physical examinations to reconfirm physical fitness for the job.
