The Health, Retirement, and Long-Term Analysis Division (HRLD) is seeking a health economist to contribute to a variety of projects, analyses, and modeling.

The successful candidate will contribute to developing new studies and to designing and improving the state-of-the-art analytical models that underlie them. Analysts are also encouraged to turn projects and independent research into CBO working papers and outside publications.

Tier 1 Background Investigation


Applicants should have some experience in health policy analysis, either as a student or through employment. They should have strong quantitative skills, experience using large data files, an in-depth knowledge of at least one programming language, and an interest in the development of microsimulation models. Applicants also should be able to initiate and complete research projects, both independently and with a team; be able to clearly present their work orally and in writing to nontechnical audiences; and want to work on issues of current or potential legislative interest to the Congress.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in economics or a related discipline, or a masters degree in economics or a related discipline along with at least three years of equivalent experience.

Resume, cover letter, a brief writing sample, salary history, contact information for three references. Also include a sample of computer code addressing a common programming problem such as merge, a query that restricts a data set to certain groups, code that generates reports or visual output, or code that uses macros. The code submitted should be no longer than 200 lines. Recent graduates should submit an unofficial copy of academic transcripts and have letters of recommendation sent to in place of the references.
