Summary

The Civil Division handles both affirmative and defensive civil litigation in both trial and appellate courts. The applicant(s) selected will represent the U.S. Government as an Assistant United States Attorney by primarily handling Freedom of Information Act and Immigration cases, including complex cases.

Responsibilities

Although the Civil Division handles a wide variety of affirmative and defensive civil cases in both trial and appellate courts in the District of Columbia, cases involving the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and the immigration laws comprise a significant portion of its work. Due to the large number of FOIA and immigration cases that are being filed in the District of Columbia, we are seeking well-qualified applicants to help handle those cases. The applicants selected will serve as term-limited Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) who will defend the government in FOIA and immigration cases. Because these positions will be focused on FOIA and immigration law, federal civil litigation experience, although still highly desirable, is somewhat less important than is typical for AUSA positions in the Civil Division. Thus, this announcement presents a unique opportunity for candidates who have less extensive federal civil litigation experience to obtain an AUSA position in the Civil Division and litigate cases in federal court on behalf of the United States.

Civil AUSAs must serve as effective and dedicated advocates for the government's interests, timely and efficiently pursue the just resolution of their assigned cases, and make sound and legally supportable decisions toward those ends. They must possess the foresight and organizational and legal skills needed to manage a large caseload that involves potentially lengthy and contentious litigation. They must be able to identify the relevant legal and factual issues in their assigned cases, and to develop and implement effective strategies for those cases. They must be able to work well with colleagues, supervisors, professional staff, and other participants in litigation such as court personnel, opposing counsel, and agency officials and attorneys. They must have strong legal research and writing skills, and be persuasive oral advocates. Civil AUSAs hired under this announcement are expected to have or quickly develop substantial subject matter expertise about the FOIA and the immigration laws.

The Civil Division does not have formal subcomponents. Consequently, although these positions will be focused on FOIA and immigration cases, attorneys hired under this announcement may also be called upon to handle or assist with other types of cases, based on the needs of Civil Division.

Residency Requirements: Assistant United States Attorneys generally must reside in the district to which he or she is appointed or within 25 miles thereof. See 28 U.S.C. 545 for district-specific information.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

Applicants must possess a J.D. Degree, be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction), and have at least 3 years post-J.D. legal or other relevant experience.

United States citizenship is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have outstanding legal ability, high moral character, mature judgment, a keen desire for public service, and an exceptional aptitude for litigation. Selections are made of the most highly qualified attorneys who apply, without regard to race, sex, religion, creed, color, national origin, handicap, age, marital status, gender identity, sexual orientation or political affiliation, significant prior civil litigation experience, although highly desirable, is not mandatory.

Interested applicants must possess a J.D. degree, be duly licensed and authorized to practice as an attorney under the laws of any state, territory of the United States, or the District of Columbia, and have at least two years post J.D. civil litigation experience.

Applicants must be an active member of the bar in good standing.

United States citizenship is required.

Salary Information: Assistant United States Attorney's pay is administratively determined based, in part, on the number of years of professional attorney experience. The range of basic pay is $74,760 to $166,400 which includes 29.32% locality pay.

How You Will Be Evaluated

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Evaluation Method: Once your complete application package is received, it will be reviewed to ensure you meet all job requirements. An attorney interview panel will then review all qualified applicants and make recommendations for invitation to interview. You will be notified if selected for an interview.
