Summary

The Architect of the Capitol (AOC), Superintend, Capitol Building is seeking a journey level Sheet Metal Mechanic for the U.S. Capitol Building, Maintenance Branch, Sheet Metal Section to design and install complex sheet metal systems and products. AOC is a legislative branch agency, the recognized authority on the preservation, maintenance and construction of the world's most iconic treasures and buildings on Capitol Hill.

Responsibilities

This position is located in the Architect of the Capitol, U.S. Capitol Building, Superintendent's Office, Assistant Superintendent, Capitol Building and Capitol Visitor Center Operations and Maintenance Division, Maintenance Branch, Sheet Metal Section.

As a journey level Sheet Metal Mechanic, the selected individual will design and install complex sheet metal systems and products.

The selected individual for this position will also have the following responsibilities as a Sheet Metal Mechanic:
  • Develops patterns and lays out, cuts, forms, joins, assembles, and installs items such as heating, air conditioning, and ventilating pipes; conduits; drying ovens; bulkheads; metal furniture; and other items and systems with combined straight and curved edges or irregular curves and planes.
  • Prepares cost estimates from drawings, blueprints or site inspections for proposed or anticipated construction projects and alterations. Maintains computerized work orders, logbooks, material inventories, cost estimates, material take offs, inventory sheets, blueprints, and drawings. Requisitions supplies, materials, and tools.
  • Plans usage of materials, equipment, and facilities on a recurring basis; establishes goals, priorities, and work arrangements; plans work assignments centered on general work schedules, procedures, and guidelines set by higher level supervisors; organizes work with other work functions. Examines work-related issues such as unnecessary costs or low production, determines causes, and implements counteractive measures; and advises on appropriate solutions.
  • Follows all relevant safety rules, regulations, and standard operating procedures. Utilizes knowledge of and complies with all OSHA safety rules and regulations to ensure that work progresses in a safe manner. Provides or receives training, either on the job or through classroom training, to ensure that all safety practices and equipment is fully utilized. Uses required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
