Senior Director, Academic Affairs and Internationalization
Position Summary: The Senior Director leads the association’s strategies to support NAFSA as a force for global learning and higher education internationalization. Reporting to the Deputy Executive Director (DED) of Knowledge Development, this position takes the staff leadership role in producing, planning, and delivering products and services to implement these strategies.
Major Functions and Responsibilities
Manage NAFSA’s capacity and reputation in global learning, curriculum internationalization, and intercultural initiatives, in addition to graduate student and faculty development (20%)
- Maintain a high-level knowledge of trends in global learning, workforce development, and curriculum internationalization.
- Lead the development of products and services for faculty and academic leaders to further their capacity and commitment to preparing globally competent students.
- Communicate a compelling narrative about the importance of global learning and the vision(s) driving international education efforts; represent NAFSA in this area to external audiences.
- Support the development of new scholarship and identification of new voices and contributors in these areas.
Lead the association’s efforts on higher education internationalization, developing strategies with the DED (40%)
- Stay abreast of the research, literature, and emerging trends related to higher education internationalization.
- Oversee the development, management and delivery of a diverse portfolio of high-quality internationalization programs that cultivate and engage a wide variety of institutional audiences for maximum impact.
- Develop new products, publications, and services to further NAFSA’s reputation in internationalization, support senior international education (IE) leaders, and create additional sources of revenue.
- Collaborate on the association’s programming and engagement efforts related to university leadership.
- Develop, monitor, and manage a budget for the department’s programs that expands revenue streams for the association.
Lead a team of staff professionals supporting members and IE professionals, developing programs and products to serve campus leaders in internationalization and global learning (20%)
- Motivate, support, assess and evaluate the team’s production of timely, high quality programs and products for IE administrators, faculty, academic, and internationalization leaders.
- Provide regular reports to the DED and other audiences on the strategies and accomplishments of the department.
Work with the International Education Leadership (IEL) and Teaching, Learning, and Scholarship (TLS) knowledge community leadership to advance the internationalization and global learning strategies of the association, aligning with NAFSA’s overall strategic plan (10%)
- Oversee the development of annual work plans for these specific member leader communities and contribute to the project management needed for success.
- Cultivate new member leaders and contributors.
- Support the successful programming in these content areas at the NAFSA annual conference.
- Manage a variety of programs that include the Global Learning Lab, Symposium on Leadership, and the Global Studies Literature Review.
- Identify key product and service lines to support member leaders, graduate students, academic professionals, and IE administrators to satisfy strategic imperatives as well as building new opportunities.
Lead cross-unit planning related to achieving the association’s agenda and strategy; collaborate with NAFSA colleagues and key stakeholders to coordinate products, programs, services, events, logistics, and marketing to ensure smooth planning and clear communication (5%)
Other duties as assigned by the DED (5%)
- Master’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
- At least eight (8) years of work experience in an international, higher education, university, or related context
- A proven track record managing the development of programs, projects, or services for higher education institutions or professionals
- Demonstrated capability developing new products and services with revenue potential
- Outstanding project management ability, including designing, budgeting, staff supervision, and evaluation and assessment
- Exceptional leadership and staff management skills
- Excellent oral communication skills including public presentations
- Strong writing and editing skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite products
- Doctoral degree in a related field
- Prior work in a membership, higher education or nonprofit organization
- Successful global program management experience
- Project management involving association/nonprofit volunteer groups or components
As representatives of a membership organization with a broad and diverse range of activities related to education and training, NAFSA staff possess more than simply specialized capabilities.
Each individual is expected to take the initiative to become knowledgeable about the organization as a whole. Association members and other staff expect colleagues to be accessible and responsive, to convey a positive attitude, and to exhibit a high degree of professionalism.
The workday is generally 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The week after Memorial Day to Labor Day, it is 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Friday.
Travel is required occasionally related to job responsibilities, especially for the annual conference, regional meetings, and other leadership meetings. Participation in the NAFSA annual conference the week of Memorial Day, including the holiday itself, is a job requirement. The annual conference is held in varying cities in the U.S.
