Summary

This position is within the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Services (ARS), Plant Disease Research Unit (PDRU) of National Germplasm Resources Laboratory (NGRL). The NGRL conducts research and service programs in the areas of plant germplasm exchange, exploration, electronic documentation, evaluation, and utilization. The PDRU provides support for germplasm quarantine, curation, and clean-stock programs, especially in plant virology.

Responsibilities

• Collects, prepares, evaluates and verifies samples and supporting records pertaining to plants
• Searches for literature pertinent to plant pathology research for new procedures or techniques to use in the laboratory or greenhouse.
• Independently initiates action to resolve or correct technical difficulties and results, or recommends resolution to supervisor.
• Keeps detailed records of experimental data.
• Maintains, calibrates and modifies complex/specialized equipment and automated systems used for test and evaluation procedures.

Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are:

At the GS-07:
Qualifying experience for GS-07 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-06 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience assisting with collecting biological samples pertaining to plants; maintaining and operating scientific equipment; and assisting with keeping records of experimental data.

OR

Education: One full year of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related. Related degrees may include Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, and Botany.

OR

A combination of specialized experience and graduate level education directly related to the work of the position as stated above. For example 6 months of specialized experience combined with 9 credit hours of relevant graduate level coursework.

At the GS-08:
Qualifying experience for GS-08 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-07 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience collecting biological samples pertaining to plants; maintaining and operating scientific equipment; and keeping records of experimental data.

OR

Education: Two full years of graduate level education or a Master's degree, if directly related to the position. Related degrees include Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, and Botany.

OR

An appropriate combination of specialized experience and graduate level education directly related to the work of the position as stated above. For example 6 months of specialized experience combined with 18 credit hours of relevant graduate level coursework.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Applicants who meet basic minimum qualifications will be placed in one of three categories: Best Qualified, Well Qualified, or Qualified. Within these categories, applicants eligible for veteran's preference will receive selection priority over non-veterans. Category placement will be determined based on applicants' quality of experience and the extent they possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA) or competencies:
