Responsibilities

You will:

- As a Science Assessor, interpret, evaluate, and analyze scientific data and other information for the development of human health and environmental assessments in the area of emphasis;

- Communicate analyses, research results and technical advice and maintain professional contacts essential to the assessment process;

- Provide technical expertise, assistance and advice to support assessment efforts;

- Identify, plan and implement research to develop and/or improve methods used in assessments.

This position is designated as Moderate Risk and requires a background investigation. Unless an appropriate background investigation is already on record with the Office of Personnel Management, you must undergo a background investigation.

If you are selected, you must complete a one year probationary period.

Qualifications

In addition to the educational requirements, we are looking for at least one year of specialized experience related to this position as described below:

To qualify for the GS-13 level, you need to have at least one year of full-time experience equivalent to the GS-12 level defined as critically reviewing, synthesizing and reporting evidence or results in the ecological and environmental science literature to assess conditions, effects, vulnerabilities or risks; and applying qualitative and quantitative analytical approaches or performing meta-analyses.

Your answers to the online assessment will be used to evaluate your competencies in the following areas: 1) Skill in applying the latest developments in assessment science, ecology, or other relevant fields to extend and modify current approaches; 2) Ability to coach and mentor junior scientists on advances in applicable scientific methods; 3) Ability to work collaboratively on multi-disciplinary teams and committees; 4) Skill in written communication; 5) Skill in oral communication; 6) Ability to provide expertise, assistance, and advice in support of assessments; 7) Skill in project management.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

You need a degree or combination of education and experience as described below to qualify for this position.

Biologist: You must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in one of the following: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position; OR a combination of education and experience with courses equivalent to a major, as listed.

Ecologist: You must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in biology or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours in ecology, and 12 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences.

Toxicologist: You must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in toxicology, or an appropriate discipline of the biological, medical, or veterinary sciences that included at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, biochemistry, or physiology, and 12 semester hours in toxicology.

Physical Scientist: You must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in one of the following: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics; OR a combination of education and experience with education equivalent to one of the majors listed that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
