Responsibilities

The incumbent will operate and maintain the NIST Nuclear Reactor and associated systems. Requires ability to apply the principles, methods, and technologies of various engineering and scientific disciplines to reactor operations; must obtain and maintain an operator license in accordance with 10CFR55. Eligible to apply for licensure by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

In order to qualify, applicants must have one year (52 weeks) of the specialized experience equivalent at the GS-08 (ZT-II at NIST). Specialized experience is defined as experience in the operation, maintenance and safety aspects of nuclear research reactors and neutron scattering instruments.

Two full years of graduate education

A master's degree

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

This notice is issued under direct-hire authority to recruit new talent to occupations for which NIST has a severe shortage of candidates.

A one year probationary period may be required.

Physical requirements of this position may include but are not limited to: moderate lifting (15-44 pounds); moderate carrying (15 to 44 pounds); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; both hands required; operation of crane, truck, tractor, or motor vehicle; ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; specific visual requirement (correctable to 20/40); depth perception; ability to distinguish basic colors; and hearing (aid permitted). Environmental factors may include but are not limited to: outside and inside; electrical energy; working around machinery with moving parts; working on ladders or scaffolding; working below ground; working closely with others; working alone; and protracted or irregular hours of work.

This position is covered by an Alternative Personnel Management System (APMS). This system replaces the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and grade with career paths and pay bands. For information regarding how the pay bands correspond to the General Schedule, click here.
