Job Announcement

Responsible for the overall management of a community library in the absence of the branch manager. Directly supervises Information Services staff. Responsible for training and counseling staff and evaluating their performance. Responds to the needs of library users of all ages, educational levels and cultural backgrounds at the info desk. Advises patrons of all ages on leisure reading. Makes suggestions for the collection to collection management. Conducts online searches and Troubleshoots equipment as needed. May speak to community groups to market library services. Conducts tours of the branch and presents programs for adults. May conduct Information Services department meetings. Works with departmental volunteers. Participates on management team to develop objectives and work plans for the branch. Works on system-wide projects for the enhancement of library services.

Note: The salary offer will not exceed the mid-point or ($72,292.69) of the advertised salary range.

Schedule: Flexibility is imperative. The schedule includes evenings and Saturdays and Sundays as assigned. The schedule may vary depending on the needs of the library.

Serves on Branch Management Team;
Serves as person-in-charge;
May schedule staff and plan workflow to ensure adequate coverage;
Resolves non-routine patron interactions by communicating and interpreting library policy for staff and the general public;
Addresses the more difficult and complex reference and reader advisory services;
Promotes and represents Library System before outside groups;
May develop informational finding tools;
May select, train, supervise, and evaluate subordinate personnel;
May facilitate staff meetings;
Answers informational and reference questions from customers using print and electronic resources;
Assists and instructs customers in the use of print and online materials and technology;
Advises and assists customers in the selection of books, periodicals, media, and other materials;
Plans and provides programs and outreach to customers of all ages;
Maintains collection by weeding, marketing, and merchandising library materials;
Troubleshoots library computers and reports unresolved problems through proper channels;
Performs copy cataloging of library materials;
Identifies materials to be considered for addition to the library collection;
Remains current in resources, services and technologies in the information field;
May supervise volunteers.
Serves as acting branch manager in the absence of the branch manager;
Assists community branch manager in planning and directing the activities of a community library;
Directly supervises adult information services and the youth services manager within the branch;
Oversees the management of the branch collection.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from college and a master's degree from an accredited library school and one year of professional library experience.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Possession of a certificate issued by the Virginia State Board for Certification of Librarians within three (3) months of date of appointment to the position.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Two or more years of public library experience with one or more years of experience in a supervisory capacity.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to the position will be required to complete a criminal background check and Child Protective Services Registry check to the satisfaction of the employer.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to lift books weighing up to 15 pounds. Ability to push and pull full 4-wheeled book carts and book bins. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
