Job Description:

The Literacy Instructional Specialist will be responsible for overseeing the development and implementation of the K-5 literacy curriculum, including reading, writing, speaking, listening, and research competencies aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning. This person will provide instructional support and coaching to all ACPS elementary schools as they work to ensure that each student develops appropriate literacy competency. A major responsibility is working with building leadership and teachers to support literacy best practices, including using data to monitor student progress, providing analysis of school-wide trends in literacy instruction, and making recommendations about potential next steps to address identified areas of needs.

This job reports to the Chief Academic Officer of Curriculum Design and Instructional Services.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree; Master's degree preferred.
  • Certificates & Licenses: Valid Virginia Department of Education postgraduate professional teaching license required, or the ability to obtain one.
  • Experience: Five years of public school teaching experience.


Essential functions:

Curriculum Design and Development:
  • Facilitates the development of a suggested scope and sequence and related lesson sequence for each grade level of the K-5 Reading/Language Arts curriculum guides.
  • Coordinates the design and development of the elementary Reading Language Arts curriculum guides (comprehensive course sequence).

Instructional Services:
  • Provides ongoing professional development to ensure fidelity of implementation of the written curriculum in all Reading/Language Arts classes, courses, and grade levels, including reading in the content areas.
  • Provides ongoing modeling and demonstration lessons, coaching, and mentoring to all Literacy instructors, K-5, including supporting teachers new to the division to ensure their use of research-based best practices.
  • Collaborates with curriculum and instructional specialists in the offices of ELL, SPED, and TAG to ensure that all students receive appropriate differentiation and interventions to ensure their literacy progress.

Assessment and Progress Monitoring:
  • Analyzes data related to student performance in K-5 Literacy to ensure effective progress monitoring of student achievement in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and research.

Budget and Materials Management:
  • Develops and monitors budget for the K-5 Reading and literacy program.
  • Ensures that all required resources (print and non-print) are available in every elementary school to support effective implementation of the written curriculum in Reading/Language Arts.

Communication and Interpersonal Competencies:
  • Assumes other responsibilities as may be assigned.
