Temporary Recreation Leader III

Overview
In pursuit of service excellence, the Temporary Recreation Leader III performs advanced-level recreation work. A Recreation Leader III will act as a Site Supervisor at an Out of School Time Program site. The Recreation Leader III will plan and initiate programs and activities for youth 5-17 years old from all backgrounds in arts and crafts, sports, games, music, drama, cooking, exercise and field trips. An incumbent in this class may provide supervision to a small number of subordinate staff. Our Recreation Leader III should also be available to work various hours, Monday to Friday, from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. and some evenings and weekends.

You will have the support of and work under the direction of a Recreation Coordinator and Regional Program Director. You will execute administrative and program needs that meets high standards of excellence.

The Opportunity
  • Assist in the operation and record keeping for on-site lunch/snack programs for youth participants;
  • Attends to sick and injured children, fills out incident/illness report forms and contact parents as needed;
  • Corresponds with supervisors, co-workers, and parents via emails, letters and phone conversations;
  • Ensures all safety precautions and guidelines are followed;
  • Makes preparation for recreational activities at one or more sites on a particular date: opens site, sets up equipment, assures that officials and teams are there, ascertains that rules and regulations are followed, controls the crowd, stores equipment, and secures the site;
  • Manages and prioritizes multiple tasks and assignments;
  • Participates in staff meetings, in-service training, sessions, and workshops;
  • Performs operational functions such as record keeping, program registration, attendance, and cash handling;
  • Plans, organize and develop sport and recreation programs, drama, music, dancing, and arts and crafts program in order to ensure that activities and events are made available to the community;
  • Performs related work as required.


About the Department
The mission of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities is to enrich the City of Alexandria by creating meaningful experiences through public space, cultural activities, and programming. The City of Alexandria Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities received national accreditation from the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA). National accreditation requires park and recreation agencies to meet 155 standards representing elements of effective and efficient park and recreation operations.

Minimum & Additional Requirements

High School Diploma or GED; one year of experience as a Recreation Leader II, or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. First Aid training, valid driver's license issued by state of residence. Small Pool Manager: possession of a valid Red Cross or comparable Senior Life Saving and Swimming Pool Operator's Certificate. Assistant Pool Manager: (Large Pool) same as for a Small Pool Manager, plus two years swimming pool experience, and the ability to perform routine maintenance/repair work on pool equipment.

Preferred Qualifications

Two years experience in community recreational work performing tasks in the required area at a level equivalent to Recreation Leader II; Two year experience leading recreational and cultural activities in arts and crafts, sports, games, music, drama, cooking, exercise and field trips, or any equivalent combination; Completion of college-level courses in physical education, recreation, fine arts, or other related field; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

This position requires successful completion of a criminal records background check and drug screening prior to employment.
