Recreation Coordinator

The City of Alexandria is located in northern Virginia and is bordered by the District of Columbia (Potomac River), Arlington and Fairfax counties. Overview
In pursuit of service excellence, the Recreation Coordinator will assist the Recreation Manager in overseeing and leading fee-based programs and staff for throughout the City at various facilities. The Recreation Coordinator will also be responsible for assisting in the management and operations of the Durant Arts Center. An incumbent in this class works under the close supervision of a Recreation Manager. The Recreation Coordinator should be available to work various hours which include days, evenings, weekends and some holidays. Enthusiasm, flexibility and excellent communication skills are needed to be successful in this position.

Each member of the team is accountable for the outstanding delivery of services to the community. The ideal candidate should possess good knowledge of the principles and practices of program management and community recreational work; ability to plan and direct program activities; ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, participants and the public; ability to generate interest and participation in center activities with varied age groups; ability to lead and manage summer camp programs; and the ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and writing. Your ability to work independently and to use judgment within established procedures; experience preparing reports; ability to organize, ability to work with a variety of staff at all levels and to handle assignments across sections of Recreation Services Division will ensure success in this role.

The Opportunity
  • Assists in overseeing the program operations on a daily basis;
  • Assists with the hiring process; approves the selection of staff and processing of paperwork;
  • Attends scheduled staff meetings and training;
  • Communicates concerns and makes recommendations to supervisors regarding participants, contractors, and seasonal staff;
  • Develops measures for each program/activity to evaluate success and adjusts as necessary;
  • Maintains youth camp health records;
  • Monitors the annual program budget and provides justification for additional resources that support the Fee Classes and Camps operation;
  • Plans and develops programs for youth and adults including setting fees;
  • Provides excellent customer service providing information, answering questions and concerns from the public;
  • Purchases supplies and equipment following department and City procedures;
  • Represents the Department at public meetings and maintains working relationships with members of the community, volunteers, affiliates and stakeholders
  • Supervise staff;
  • Uses RecTrac, Munis, Kronos, and Microsoft Office to complete assignments;
  • With the Recreation Manager, daily and monthly monitoring and reporting of revenues and expenditures against the approved budget;
  • Works with the marketing department to promote through various media outlets and assists with preparation of marketing materials such as brochures, flyers and the program guide;
  • Performs related work as required.

National accreditation requires park and recreation agencies to meet 155 standards representing elements of effective and efficient park and recreation operations.

Minimum & Additional Requirements

Four-Year College Degree; completion of college-level courses in recreation, physical education, business management or related fields. Experience in community recreation at a level equivalent to a Recreation Supervisor I, or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

Five or more years of recreation programming experience, including proven experience producing and managing a variety of diverse recreational programs, to include summer camp programs. Previous experience leading or directing the work of others. Possession of a valid driver's license.
