Description Job Requisition: Engineering Technician (Transportation) Job Description: Leidos is seeking a hands-on Automotive and Transportation Engineering Technician to join our team! The Engineering Technician will be a key part of the Leidos team supporting connected and automated vehicle research at the FHWA Turner Fairbank Highway Research Center in McLean, VA. The successful candidate will be part of a larger research team that advances connected and automated vehicle technologies for the FHWA via developing, testing, and demonstrating new capabilities associated with vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication. The Engineering Technician will support researchers and engineers by configuring, installing, and maintaining advanced transportation research testbeds/equipment including traffic signals/controllers and a fleet of connected and automated vehicles. The selected candidate will have a working knowledge of automotive technologies and communications/networking protocols, hands-on experience troubleshooting electromechanical systems as demonstrated by relevant work history or technical education, and an interest in learning about and developing intelligent transportation solutions. The work environment is very collegial and benefits from a collaborative effort with multiple team members. In addition to the laboratory and office environment, some field work, testing and validation of systems is often required. The candidate will receive advance vehicle control training to safely operate the vehicles. Other duties include: * Assisting engineers with various types of hardware and software, primarily commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS), required for control of traffic signals, traffic management systems, and vehicle guidance systems. * Collaborating in the design, specification, and selection of hardware to meet research needs. * Prototyping, fabrication, installation, and troubleshooting of electrical equipment and components. * Interfacing with researchers and other users of the Saxton Laboratory and associated testbeds. * Assisting with various phases of research projects across the breadth of transportation science. * Supporting the operations and maintenance of the lab facility, equipment, and associated testbeds. * Interfacing with Government technical and business personnel. Required Education & Experience: * Associate's degree in Automotive Technology or other technical disciple with 3+ years directly related experience or Bachelor's degree in Engineering Technology, or other technical discipline with 2+ years related experience. * Familiarity with vehicle power and communication systems. * Ability to test and troubleshoot complex power and communication systems. * Must be a good team player and be able to give and take constructive feedback. * Must be prompt, schedule-conscious, and able to focus on the work at hand. * Must be coachable and open to self-discovery and professional improvement. * Must communicate clearly in English, both orally and in writing (authorship and publication of technical papers and presentations is a plus). * Project Management skills to ensure the products and services are delivered on-time and within budget. * Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance. Preferred Experience: * Familiarity with traffic signal controller operations, configuration, communications, and Transportation Management Center operations. * Familiarity with software development tools and methods, including one or more commonly used programming languages, such as C++, JAVA, or MATLAB. * Knowledge of geospatial positioning (eg, GPS) and position correction (eg, RTCM). * Experience in Ethernet Network engineering. * Wireless communications, particularly DSRC, cellular, or Wi-Fi. * Connected vehicle or transportation communication standards (eg, SAE J2735, NTCIP 1202, etc).
