Position: Chief Development Officer Incumbent: Open Reports to: CEO Direct Reports: Sr. Director of Corporate and Foundation Giving, Sr. Direct of Strategic Partnerships, Director of Direct Marketing, Development Operations Manager Position Summary: The Chief Development Officer works collaboratively with all staff and directly supports the comprehensive fundraising strategies of the organization. As a member of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) Management Team, the Chief Development Officer is responsible for all fundraising strategies for the Memorial and Museum. The position collaborates closely with the Development Committee Chair and other senior staff as a thought-partner and team leader in institutional planning. Primary Areas of Responsibility: 35% Strategic Planning and Implementation: Work with CEO, Development Committee, and Development staff to develop, implement, execute, and evaluate long-term goals and strategies for meeting fundraising targets, including multimillion dollar annual fundraising goals. Budgetary goals will increase annually. 20% Management: Provide oversight, strategic guidance, appropriate delegation of tasks, and supervise a department staff. 10% Board Relations: Liaise with the Board Development Committee in the role of guiding and offering direction in an effort to cultivate and steward successful board fundraising. 35% Specific duties related to these functions can include, but are not limited to: Lead and manage Development team responsible for mission-driven annual campaigns, events, major gifts, corporate and foundation support, and planned giving. Identify opportunities to secure undesignated funds as well as designated opportunities when they have the potential for attracting major gifts. Direct staff in conducting prospect research and developing profiles from new and nontraditional sources to ensure a deeper, broader prospect pipeline among donors and prospects. Steward and maintain relationships with current and prospective donors and utilize Committee, Board, and volunteer leadership to assist. Develop and supervise the preparation of creative, individually tailored written and/or alternative media presentations for solicitations and mini campaigns. Support materials include written proposals, project budgets, recognition packages, interim and final reports, benefit delivery, and other support materials that enhance the presentation. Coordinate with marketing and events team, appropriate Museum staff and donor staff in the planning and execution of Museum donor-related events. Participate in the strategic planning process, translating initiatives into measurable, achievable goals for the Development Department. Establish annual written Department and staff goals for all areas of Development to include annual, mid-and long-term goals. Develop and lead donor cultivation efforts and ensures readiness for and completion of comprehensive campaigns, strengthening donor giving, and increasing the stature of the Museum as an outstanding, worthy, and impactful philanthropic cause in the community. Accountable for all gift requests of higher-level donors and in identifying, cultivating, requesting, and stewarding high-level prospects. Develop operating and capital program budgets in coordination with Finance. Establish and measure quality and risk standards with legal and financial counsel. Create development policies, procedures and ensure that all development activities comply with department and legal requirements (including relevant tax law). Responsible for ensuring that Development staff collaborate effectively with all other departments, and relevant staff on development materials and events ensuring timeliness, accuracy, and consistency of message in all activities. Responsible for ensuring that all Development staff are actively engaged in NLEOMF programs and providing support as needed. Manage a small portfolio of high-level prospects, among other duties as assigned. Opportunity to grow and build revenue lanes up to $30 million a year as a stretch goal Oversee a Development Department of five to eight staff with opportunity to grow based on revenue growth. Perform other duties, as instructed by CEO. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: At least ten year's experience in professional fundraising. Bachelor's degree required Experience recruiting, managing, and motivating a dynamic fundraising team. Superior oral and written communication skills are imperative. Knowledge or working experience with law enforcement a plus. Must be computer literate and have demonstrated ability to work with donor databases. Working knowledge and/or understanding of Raiser's Edge strongly preferred. Working knowledge and/or understanding of Salesforce/Microsoft Dynamics considered beneficial. Experience growing revenue from Direct Mail and Volunteer Leaders Experience with Capital Campaigns is highly desirable. Experience building annual campaigns and messaging. Experience cultivating leads and identify pipeline development for other members. Be able to coach staff and provide ongoing professional fundraising guidance. Minimum Skills and/or Knowledge Required: Interpersonal skills: This position requires an extremely high level of interpersonal, organizational, written, and oral communications skills. The ability to relate well in a professional and easy manner to donors of all levels, Board members, and to corporate executives, as well as with other Museum staff members is critical. The incumbent should be able to create and manage a sophisticated fundraising program for the Fund, while simultaneously navigating the complexities of the Museum's overall institutional fundraising needs. The incumbent will need demonstrated decision-making ability, collaboration, and delegation, and must be able to react with diplomacy, sensitivity, and a clear understanding of the broad issues associated with managing a major arts institution. The position requires regular collaboration with other development managers and other Fund and Museum staff. The incumbent must have the ability to prioritize work efforts, to clearly and consistently delegate appropriate work to staff, and to ensure that the myriad of details required in any fundraising effort are carefully considered and attended. The incumbent must have the ability and confidence to work without close supervision, including the ability to foresee development needs. Working Conditions: Working conditions are normal for an office environment and/or home-office setting. Travel is required. Opportunity to work remotely or at the Museum located in Washington, DC.
