Job Announcement

The McLean Community Center, servicing residents of Small District 1A-Dranesville, seeks an experienced communications professional to perform public relations, marketing and communications work in a deadline-driven environment. Working in conjunction with members of the Public Information Office, develops and executes center marketing initiatives through various digital touchpoints. Occasional weekend, evening and holiday work will be required.
  • Applies public relations and marketing industry best practices and trends to the use of social media platforms, placing and monitoring the success of online advertising campaigns.
  • Develops online marketing strategies in support of the agency's mission.
  • Conceives, writes and edits content for both print and online publications.
  • Promotes center programs and services on a variety of online platforms, including but not limited to the center's website, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
  • Consults with agency staff to develop online marketing campaigns for programs, services and events.
  • Working in collaboration with the center's graphic designer, creates print and online advertisements, ensuring adherence to established brand guidelines.


Illustrative Duties

  • Implements photographic coverage of events;
  • Makes presentations on behalf of the department to community and by County officials;
  • Implements print production projects;
  • Writes proposals in support of departmental goals and projects;
  • Serves as a member of the department's communication planning (strategic planning, action planning) team;
  • Makes public presentations on behalf of department;
  • Responds to requests for information regarding agency/County programs;
  • Provides assistance to agency/County staff as to the most effective means of communicating information to the general public, government employees, and other target groups;
  • May supervise the work of administrative or paraprofessional staff in bringing projects to completion.


Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to write, edit and design for departmental publications;
  • Ability to write for multimedia;
  • Knowledge of photography and planning photography coverage;
  • Knowledge of appropriate standards and formatting for online media;
  • Ability to use current computer software and e-mail systems;
  • Ability to develop or create web sites;
  • Ability to consult with management and other staff;
  • Ability to solve problems;
  • Ability to supervise projects;
  • Ability to manage a budget;
  • Ability to work under pressure;
  • Ability to work under pressure;
  • Ability to plan and review the work of others;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with the public, the press, and County employees.


Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to a bachelor's degree in communication, business administration or a related field, plus three years of progressively responsible experience in communication area of specialization.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and a check of the Child Protective Services Registry to the satisfaction of the employer.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Three to five year's experience developing communication strategies and strategic messaging for an education, cultural or recreation organization. Skilled in writing and editing for a variety of audiences. Knowledge of social media marketing tools. Skilled in the use of Joomla Content Management System, Abode InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator. Excellent verbal communication skills.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Job is generally sedentary in nature; however visual acuity is required to read data on computer monitor. Incumbent must be able to operate keyboard driven equipment. Employee may be required to lift up to 15 lbs. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
