Responsibilities

  • You will apply current environmental chemistry and materials test methods, standards and practices in quality control including local and corporate policies and procedures.
  • You will collaborate with senior staff in the planning and execution of laboratory audits and assessment including the review of quality control procedures, data and documents.
  • You will evaluate laboratory records and assess the performance of NAVSEA laboratories regarding environmental chemistry and material science applications relative to quality systems requirements of testing laboratories.
  • You will accompany and provide assistance to agency personnel during audits associated with the Navy Laboratory Accreditation Program (LAP).

Qualifications

For GS-11 Chemist position: Your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
-Experience applying environmental chemistry and materials test methods, standards and practices to evaluate quality control.
-Experience using the international standard, ISO/IEC 17025 to determine the competence of testing and calibration laboratories.
-Experience calibrating and operating analytical instrumentation involved in the sampling and testing of environmental media, chemical, metallurgical, and materials engineering testing to include mass/infrared spectrometers, mercury analyzers and gas/ion chromatographs.
-Experience using computer software to type and send email and produce spreadsheets/graphics.

Education

This position has a basic education requirement:
  • Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.

    OR
  • Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
