Responsibilities

The RN Chief for Sterile Processing Service (SPS) is accountable to the Associate Director for Patient Care Service and has overall accountability and responsibility for planning, designing, integrating, implementing, modifying and evaluating the Sterile Processing Service. He/she provides direct oversight for the hospital's supply management, assuring needed resources are provided to clinical areas while reducing hospital cost of managing and moving supplies. RNChief of SPS leads the Hospital Commodities Committee. Collaboration, commitment and communication are essential to establish, maintain and evaluate effectiveness of the health system supply and equipment management.
He/she is responsible for assisting the Associate Director for Patient Care Services with planning, organizing, directing, controlling, negotiating and implementing cost effective clinical supplies and equipment. He/she ensures products selected maintain levels of quality, safety, clinical efficacy, as well as total cost performance. He/she analyzes supply chain workflow in clinical areas, developing and implementing process improvement. He/she collaborates with clinical, administrative, and managerial personnel to identify and resolve problems. In the absence of the Associate Director for Patient Care Services, may assume certain duties as assigned.
As the RN Chief for SPS, he/she has continued development and oversight of the national policy pertaining to the reprocessing of reusable medical equipment throughout the total health care system. He/she is responsible for Standard Operating Procedures and staff training programs at all levels for sterile processing, disinfecting processes, other types of cleaning equipment, and reprocessing of reusable medical equipment throughout the healthcare system. He/she maintains a professional relationship with infection control clinicians, clinical leaders and all contracted facility's departments and vendors to ensure effective, efficient support of daily operations of all activities that relate to the reprocessing of reusable medical supplies and instrumentation.
Role responsibilities and accountabilities also include development, in collaboration with the Office of Quality and Safety, national Quality Management metrics to ensure expected actions and outcomes. This knowledge includes understanding infection control and quality improvement process associated with the reprocessing of reusable medical equipment which is reflective of the educational, experiential, and competency requirements outline in the four (4) dimensions. Further, this manager is responsible and accountable for timely employee evaluations, timely maintenance of competency folders, and continuous survey readiness.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/24/2019.
Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing ( ACEN ) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education ( CCNE ). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
Preferred Experience: At least 4 years of progressive clinical and leadership experience in SPS with demonstrated knowledge and expertise in administration.

Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
  • Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience.

Physical Requirements: The physical requirements of this position include lifting, prolonged standing and sitting, frequent bending, walking (distance), climbing, reaching (overhead, extensive/repetitive), repetitive motion and stooping. The mental/sensory requirements include recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly, keyboarding, reading and logical thinking. The environment's pace can vary from steady to a sometimes fast pace requiring handling of multiple priorities, frequent, sometimes intense customer interactions, and the ability to adapt to frequent changes in a sometimes noisy environment. There may be the need to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to disease, illness and hazardous materials.

Additional information

Annual leave shall accrue for full-time Nurses, and Nurse Anesthetists at the rate of 8 hours for each full biweekly pay period.
