Summary

As a Mechanical Engineer, you will serves as an expert advisor to management on vehicle engineering technical specifications.

Location of position: Vehicle Engineering Branch, Washington, DC

Responsibilities

You will be responsible for:
  • Serving as the technical authority on specialized projects within the agency to develop a coordinated approach to unique problems or areas in which GSA, other Federal agencies or the private sector have previously not been involved or concerned.
  • Analyzing, evaluating, and reviewing new vehicles, products and technology within the automotive industry, and continually updates existing Federal Standards, specifications, purchase descriptions and product lines with the latest technology and design processes.
  • Serving as the technical expert to provide authoritative direction to contracting officers.
  • Serving at the program expert in meetings, interagency working groups, industrial and technical boards, committees and panels, where peers are highly knowledgeable engineering, technical or vehicle manufacturing specialists, dealing with vehicle design, specification and quality engineering matters.

The GS-13 salary range starts at $99,172 per year. If you are a new federal employee, your starting salary will likely be set at the Step 1 of the grade for which you are selected.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS FOR ENGINEERS: A Degree in professional engineering OR a combination of college level education, training, and/or technical experience. For specifics on qualifying education and/or experience see below:

A. Degree: Engineering. To be acceptable, the program must: (1) lead to a bachelor's degree in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by ABET; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.

OR

B. Combination of education and experience -- college-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying engineering, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering. The adequacy of such background must be demonstrated by one of the following:
1. Professional registration or licensure -- Current registration as an Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT)1, or licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) by any State, the District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico. Absent other means of qualifying under this standard, those applicants who achieved such registration by means other than written test (e.g., State grandfather or eminence provisions) are eligible only for positions that are within or closely related to the specialty field of their registration. For example, an applicant who attains registration through a State Board's eminence provision as a manufacturing engineer typically would be rated eligible only for manufacturing engineering positions.
2. Written Test -- Evidence of having successfully passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination or any other written test required for professional

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:

In addition to the Basic Requirements listed above, to qualify, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level or higher in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience applying a technical knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, techniques, methods, and precedents gained in performing technical work in functions such as automotive engineering principles to perform in-depth analysis on a variety of highly complex motor vehicle designs, initiating and/or leading projects involving the evaluation of fleet purchase descriptions, performance and inspections to design and construct final motor vehicle builds.

  • Skill in theoretical, technical and practical knowledge of motor vehicles and related equipment in order to design, specify, evaluate, and select proper vehicles and equipment that have the capability of meeting unique, numerous and diverse operational requirements.
  • Knowledge of engineering practices for making significant development, modifications or adaptation of instrumentation to obtain desired results including model development and validation.
  • Knowledge of current automotive industry and awareness of emerging technologies and their applications to a Fleet management program and processes.
  • Skill in expressing data and technical information to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information; making clear and convincing oral presentations; listening to others, attending to nonverbal cues, and responding appropriately.
