Job DescriptionOriginally founded in 1978 under the name of South Baltimore Family Health Center as a well-baby clinic, Family Health Centers of Baltimore, Inc. (FHCB) is a not-for-profit federally qualified health center (FQHC), providing primary care services in two South Baltimore locations: Cherry Hill and Brooklyn. We proudly offer comprehensive primary and preventive health care, specialized programs in HIV and substance abuse treatment to a high risk population. In addition to traditional services , both locations provide state certified outpatient substance abuse treatment and comprehensive dental care. So if your goals are aligned with ours, we invite you to come grow with us!We are currently in search of a Dental Hygienist to provide preventative oral care under a dentist's direction and supervision. They clean patients' teeth, place dental sealants and examine their mouths for signs of damage, gingivitis, and other diseases. Hygienists teach patients how to maintain good oral health. The Dental Hygienist also performs oral cancer screenings and radiographic evaluations as well as charting conditions of decay and disease; the hygienist is capable of performing all procedures in compliance with the dental practice act. ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIESPrepares treatment room for patient by adhering to prescribed procedures and protocols.Prepares patient for dental hygiene treatment by welcoming, soothing, seating, and draping patient.Provides information to patients and employees by answering questions and requests.Maintains instrumentation for dental hygiene treatment by selecting, sharpening, and sterilizing.Selects materials and equipment for the dental hygiene visit by evaluating patient's oral health.Completes dental prophylaxis by cleaning deposits and stains from teeth and from beneath gum margins.Apply flourides and sealants for tooth protectionAdminister local anesthetics to patientsExamine each patient's oral health and communicate findings to dentistsDetects disease by completing oral cancer screening; feeling and visually examining gums; using probes to locate periodontal disease and to assess levels of recession; exposing and developing radiographic studies.Helps to arrests dental decay by applying fluorides and other cavity- preventing agents.Helps dentist manage dental and medical emergencies by maintaining CPR certification, emergency drugs, and oxygen supply, and directory of emergency numbers.Educates patients by giving oral hygiene and plaque control instructions and postoperative instructions; providing reminders of time of next dental hygiene visit.Document treatment plans and care performed on patientsDocuments dental hygiene services by recording vital signs and medical and dental histories; charting in patient records.Maintains safe and a clean working environment by complying with the procedures, rules, and regulations of Family Health Center's Infection Control Policies.Protects patients and employees by adhering to FHCB infection-control policies and protocols.Ensures operation of dental equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs; maintaining equipment inventories; evaluating new equipment and techniques.Maintains dental supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed supplies; placing and expediting orders for supplies; verifying receipt of supplies.Conserves dental resources by using equipment and supplies as needed to accomplish job results..GENERAL PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:Knowledge of oral pathology to include disease of the hard and soft tissues, disorders of tooth structure, developmental and congenital anomalies, salivary gland disorders, symptoms of infectious disorders, and appropriate protocols.Practical knowledge of medical diseases, conditions, and chronic degenerative diseases as they relate to dental health and treatment.Knowledge of radiographic exposure techniques in order to produce radiographs of high diagnostic quality.Knowledge of state of the art preventive dentistry measures for patient instruction and trainingKnowledge of anatomy and physiology in order to interpret the examination request accurately; to understand the functioning and interrelationship of the various anatomical structures appearing on the radiographic image and the various stages of the examination to judge the acceptability of the radiograph for diagnostic use; and to present for viewingSkill in providing individual and group oral health care instructions to patients EDUCATION/WORK EXPERIENCEAssociate's or higher degree from an accredited Hygiene program.State hygiene license.Current CPR certificate.Current vaccinations.Ability to administer local anesthetic agents.Able to use an x-ray machine.Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.Comfortable using computers for a variety of tasks.Knowledgeable about oral hygiene and dental health.
