Summary

About the position: This position is located within the Dept. of Nutrition Services at the Fort Belvoir Community Hospital in Fort Belvoir, VA. Incumbent serves as a Materials Handler and is responsible for performing a range of warehousing activities, including receiving, storing, selecting, and shipping general or specialized bulk and bin materials and equipment. Work requires standing on hard surfaces for extended periods and is performed inside and outside the medical treatment facility.

Responsibilities

  • Assemble items, group material according to receiving vouchers and, divide into subgroups based on property class, condition, and type of transportation.
  • Route items for processing or hold to authorized personnel/area for required inspections.
  • Inspect shipments for expiration dates, perishable, and deteriorative nature of specific items to eliminate costly and wasteful expenditure of material.
  • Sign shipping documents and prepare receiving reports for locally purchased items.
  • Report overages, shortages, or damaged items to supervisor or other responsible person according to established procedures.
  • Store, stack, and palletize items based on experience and/or established procedures.
  • Utilize handcarts, dollies, and other manual equipment to move stock.
  • Select and assemble items for shipment or issue.
  • Assemble items for shipping according to information on receiving vouchers.
  • Check condition of shipping containers prior to loading, and confirm shipments are loaded into proper conveyances.
  • Check stock identification change lists to ensure the selection and assembly of proper items for issue.

  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 3 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position requires the incumbent to have tuberculosis testing.
  • Appointment may require a suitability/fitness determination.
  • In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position may require the incumbent to work on any day or shift, including PMs, nights, weekends, holidays, or on an "on call" basis, necessary to meet mission requirements.
  • This position has mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Materials Handler (FLO) without more than normal supervision. Assembling items, group materials according to receiving vouchers, and dividing into subgroups based on property class, condition, and type of transportation; inspecting shipments for expiration dates, perishable, and deteriorative nature of items to eliminate costly and wasteful expenditure of material; following all established procedures for reporting overages, shortages, or damaged items to supervisor or other responsible person; storing, stacking, and palletizing items based on established procedures and/or experience; confirm the selection and assembly of proper items for issue against the stock identification change lists; operating material handling aids and equipment in receipt and storage of materials. I am considered an expert and work with a high degree of independence. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • Physical Effort: The worker is required to stand on hard surfaces for extended periods of time, and to bend, stoop, and work in tiring and sometimes uncomfortable positions. They frequently lift or carry items weighing up to 40 pounds unassisted. The heavier items (up to 70 pounds) are moved with weight handling equipment or with assistance from other workers.
  • Working Conditions: The work is performed inside or outside in areas that may be hot, damp, cold, drafty, or poorly lighted. The worker is exposed to the possibility of cuts, scrapes, bruises, abrasions, falls, and injury from falling stock or mechanized work areas. The worker may be subject to exposure from toxins, explosive hazards, or chemical fumes when working in hazardous materials areas. The work may require wearing protective clothing such as hardhats, steel toes shoes, rubber gloves, masks, and rubber aprons.
