This position is responsible for managing a profitable public relations department focused on the Hispanic market within the agency, developing and supervising the quality of service and communications provided to clients by the public relations staff of three, and serving as a member of the agency's directors group. The first assignment is managing the 2020 Census media relations, public relations, and crisis communications for the Hispanic community. Native Spanish language writing skills and a portfolio of past work are required. REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: The VP, PR & Media Relations reports to the Managing Director of the agency. RESPONSIBILITIES: Develops and maintains an efficient, profitable PR department that helps further the business goals of the agency and the agency's clients. Administers agency policies and procedures within the PR department and works with agency management to help maintain a desirable working environment throughout the agency. Develops systems and procedures within the department to effectively and efficiently serve its clients. Develops, supervises and implements media relations strategies for engaging Hispanic media on behalf of the agency and its clients, specifically starting with the day-to-day communications on the 2020 Census. Media outreach includes using established Hispanic media relationships to pitch stories, interviews, and other communications on behalf of the agency and its client. Develops and implements a crisis communications strategy for agency clients. Develops a departmental budget and oversees expenditures. Reports to agency managing partner and team member directors on status of client relations, problems, and opportunities. Searches out and develops new business opportunities for both the agency and department, develops new business strategies including proposals, budgets, and presentations. Recruits and retains key support staff in the department. Supervises key accounts, including the agency itself, and supervises PR staff. Develops an understanding of the agency's accounts and clients in order to add value to the agency's work and solve problems. Monitors and improves the levels of service quality. Provides public relations counsel to the agency and its clients. Reviews all PR proposals and budgets before submission to clients. Coordinates the utilization of PR talent, as well as other agency expertise, into effective teams which solve clients' communications problems. Fosters the professional and personal development of public relations personnel. Encourages professionalism within the division by maintaining high standards of client service, and by keeping updated on the state of the art in public relations and the entire communications/marketing field. QUALIFICATIONS: Experience in Hispanic market required. Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree preferred. 15+ years of experience required. Strong network of current Hispanic media contacts at national level and in Washington DC REQUIRED SKILLS: Be knowledgeable beyond public relations. A working knowledge of advertising and media, sales promotion, and direct marketing for the Hispanic market is key to the director's ability to provide leadership for new business development between the two sides of the agency, and to the agency's ability to thoroughly integrate marketing communications plans. Be an entrepreneur. The director must be able to develop new business, interact with the highest-level clients, and be creative in developing new services to offer clients. Be a leader. The director must have a vision about where the department is going, and that vision must dovetail with the agency's strategic intent. The director must inspire the staff to take ownership of their accounts, take responsibility for advancing the client's business, and take great care to develop the very highest quality work the agency can deliver. As the department's leader, the director leads by example in the areas of self-discipline, hard work, empowering others to do their best, and recognizing and rewarding hard work. Be a consultant. The director consults daily with staff on issues both complex and simple, adding value by bringing experience to and good ideas about the process of doing business as well as about the work itself. Be a counselor. The director is the senior public relations counselor with experience in all aspects of the discipline and serves as the agency's key public relations strategic and creative planner. In this role, the director must be able to synthesize information, and develop insights into the clients' business problems. Be persuasive. The director must be sensitive to what clients want and need, have the instincts to discover what clients will find valuable and appropriate, and be able to get clients to want what the agency has to offer. Be a good manager. The director must be able to organize the work of the public relations staff. As a member of the director's group, he/she must also be a significant contributor to the business of managing the entire agency so that it is living up to its vision and plans. Have good judgment. The director must be able to grasp complex issues quickly and make the right recommendations to clients who are facing a crisis.
