Trash Free Maryland Executive Director Job Description Trash Free Maryland (TFMD) seeks an experienced, energetic, and visionary leader who is passionate about creating lasting change for our environment. Who We AreTrash Free Maryland, founded in 2010, is a nonprofit organization focused on lasting change to prevent trash pollution. We bring together organizations, businesses, government agencies, decision makers and individuals committed to reducing trash in Maryland's environment. Many of our partners have participated in community cleanup events and been discouraged by the futility of their efforts. Trash Free Maryland seeks to prevent litter from happening in the first place.We focus on programs and policies to reduce the use of disposable bags and polystyrene, and incentivize recycling of bottles, cans and other materials. Trash Free Maryland also participates in the development and assessment of regulations aimed at reducing trash pollution, fostering changes within industry and promoting lasting behavior change through public education, community outreach and awareness programs. Responsibilities:Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director (ED) will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for TFMD. We welcome experienced, self-starter candidates who can strongly excel in several, if not all, of these areas: Leadership & Management Work with the Board of Directors to foster a big-picture vision for the direction of TFMD's work, while advancing the day-to-day strategies that will accomplish our goals. Help to grow and strengthen the Board. Manage future staff and consultants, including hiring, supervision and professional development. Lead the operational systems of the organization to ensure excellence in program evaluation, fundraising, budgeting and financial tracking and reporting.Support a positive workplace culture with a team environment that allows staff and volunteers to feel connected to the mission and engaged and empowered in their work. Fundraising & Communications: Work with Board and staff to ensure the financial viability of the organization, including grant writing and implementation, donor cultivation, and corporate sponsorships.Act as executive editor for all brand communications to ensure alignment with messaging strategies. Deepen and refine all aspects of communications-from web presence and social media to external relations-with the goal of creating a stronger brand. Act as the spokesperson for Trash Free Maryland.Communicate and publish program results with an emphasis on the successes of specific local programs as a model for regional and national replication. Programming: Advocate for new and innovative litter policies including source reduction with the media, residents, elected officials, the business community, researchers, educators and students and other stakeholders in the region.Continue to build a pipeline of work that will sustain future growth and expansion of Trash Free Maryland. This work will involve cultivating relationships with existing and new funders, and other for-profit and non-profit entities. Coordinate the organization's public policy positions with the Board of Directors and work closely with partners to shape legislation as well as strategic responses and recommendations on public policy issues. Minimum Requirements include: Bachelor's DegreeAt least 5 years of professional experience and 2 years of management/supervisory experience, as well as a track record of effectively leading an organization or campaign.Experienced leadership in legislative campaigns, including lobbying and using a variety of grassroots advocacy and earned media tactics to enact policy change.A commitment to organizational management with the ability to coach staff, manage and develop high-performance teams; successfully work with a Board of Directors; set and achieve strategic objectives; and manage a budget. Strong social marketing and public relations experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders. Strong written, presentation and facilitation skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills.Action-oriented, entrepreneurial, adaptable and innovative approach to business planning.Demonstrated ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people and lead coalitions. Passion, idealism, integrity, positive attitude, mission-driven and self-direction are significant assets for the executive director. Must be a relationship-builder. Preferred Experience:Strong understanding of Maryland's environmental laws, particularly as it relates to trash. Experience in Maryland's legislative arena.Specific examples of having developed and operationalized strategies that have taken an organization or campaign to the next stage of growth.Multi-faceted fundraising experience.Demonstrated track record of successfully working with the media and organizing successful media events.Demonstrated ability to create and execute public awareness and community outreach campaigns.Advanced degree in environmental science, policy, law or other related field. The position is in the Annapolis/Baltimore/Washington, DC metro area and includes telecommuting with the potential for establishing office space. A car will be necessary for meetings throughout the region.
