The American Legion's subject matter expert for national defense policies and programs. Serve as the expert liaison to the National Security Commission: provide reports; plans events; and testify before Congress. Maintain professional contacts throughout the Pentagon, Department of State, and Capitol Hill. Additionally, this position will also track the progression of legislation to include the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Advise on development of policies and provides staff support to the National Security Commission to include meetings during National Conventions, National Executive Committee meetings, Washington Conferences and other ongoing activities Maintain liaison with Departments of State and Defense; related US government entities; appropriate Committees of Congress; National Security Council; other veterans organizations and national security policy groups. Develops annual Congressional reports, division budgetary inputs and statements of positions supporting National Security Commission programs. Prepares and presents testimony to Congressional subcommittees in coordination with the Legislative Division. Provide staff support for implementation of adopted resolutions, frequently coordinating within the Public Relations and Legislative Divisions. Prepares decision memoranda, briefing materials, input to Congressional testimonies, speeches, and correspondence for senior management officials, as they relate to national security topics. Prepares in-depth analytical reports of designated major national security issues. Assists the Director in preparing and implementing strategic goals. Performs other duties as assigned. . International relations, geography, political history, diplomatic history, economics, and government. . Research, analytical, writing and speaking skills. . Awareness of the federal budgeting process. . Experience with Microsoft and Internet computer systems is highly desirable. . Media/spokesperson training.
